DESCRIPTION:There is an hour before dawn when the desert air is dead still and the light has not yet decided what color it is going to be - and that is the hour hundreds of hot air balloons choose to rise together over the Coachella Valley floor. The mass ascension is the whole event. When every balloon on the field inflates at once\, the burners firing\, the color swelling up out of the dark\, the slow collective lift until they are all airborne over the desert at the same moment - there is nothing else like it in Southern California. November in the Coachella Valley sits in the exact temperature band where standing outside at dawn is not a hardship but a reward. Then there is the balloon glow: on Friday and Saturday evenings the balloons light from the inside against the black desert sky\, and it is consistently the thing people did not expect to be the highlight.
