Camerata Pacifica
Scherr Forum, 2100 E Thousand Oaks Blvd, Thousand Oaks. May 17th. Camerata Pacifica at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center — the chamber music ensemble that has been building its Thousand Oaks audience for decades by playing serious music in a room that takes it seriously. Chamber music is the most intimate scale of classical performance. The ensemble is small enough that the individual instruments are audible as individual voices — the cello has a line distinct from the bass, the violin is a separate conversation from the viola, the piano is a third thing entirely. The Scherr Forum's acoustics make that distinction legible in a way that a larger hall can't. Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival 2026
Hot air balloons launch at dawn over Lake Skinner -- twenty of them, rising slow and quiet above the Temecula Valley while the winery crowd below is still on their first glass of the morning. This is the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, June 5-7, 2026, at Lake Skinner Recreation Area in Winchester, CA. Three days of hot air balloon launches, live music on two stages, and wine tastings from Temecula Valley's best producers. Friday and Saturday nights end with a balloon glow -- the baskets lit from inside, the whole valley turning amber against the dark. It is one of the few outdoor events where the main attraction runs on weather and wind instead of a fixed setlist. The lineup: over 20 balloons in the morning launches (subject to conditions -- the pilots announce at first light), local winery booths spanning the full Temecula AVA, two music stages running afternoon through late evening, and food vendors covering everything from classic fair food to Temecula BBQ. Getting there: Lake Skinner is off Warren Road, Winchester, CA 92596. The Recreation Area has parking on site. Arrive early for balloon launches -- they happen at sunrise, typically 6-7am, and end before midday heat sets in. Gates open Friday afternoon. Weekend passes and single-day tickets at tvbwf.com. San Diego Padres vs LA Dodgers at Petco Park — May Series
The Dodgers come to Petco Park on May 18 and the city of San Diego responds accordingly. There is no series on the Padres home calendar more anticipated, more contested, or more capable of generating the kind of atmosphere that makes you grateful you showed up than the Padres vs Dodgers — the rivalry that defines National League West baseball and has been doing so for three decades. The Dodgers travel with one of the largest away contingents in baseball, and Petco Park absorbs their presence with the particular energy of a home crowd that has spent the whole year preparing to outsell the visitors on noise. This is the rivalry with the most history, the most intensity, and the most consequence — and in May, with both clubs jockeying for the top of the NL West, every inning matters at a level that regular-season baseball often cannot replicate.

Queen Bee's Open Mic Night — 1st & 3rd Thursdays
Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center hosts a bi-monthly open mic on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 8 PM — San Diego's most genuinely community-driven open mic, covering music, comedy, poetry, spoken word, and whatever else someone brings to a room that takes all of it seriously. Queen Bee's is a community arts space in North Park, not a bar with a side open mic. The difference matters: the crowd shows up for the performers rather than the other way around, which means the open mic has a different energy than most. People who have never performed in front of an audience have done their first set here. People who perform regularly keep coming back because the room is honest. The format is simple: sign up before the show, get your five to seven minutes, be respectful of the other performers. The genres are genuinely mixed — a singer-songwriter might follow a stand-up comedian who follows a slam poet. The quality varies, which is the point. YUNGBLUD: IDOLS - THE WORLD TOUR
Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Ave, Los Angeles. May 22nd. YUNGBLUD — the Doncaster artist who turned emo and pop-punk and glam rock and TikTok all into a single vehicle and drove it directly at an audience that was already waiting for exactly this — bringing the IDOLS World Tour to the Greek. The Greek Theatre is the right size for what YUNGBLUD does live. He performs for rooms that want to be performed at, and the Greek at 5,800 seats is the scale where the production can expand and the crowd can still feel like a crowd rather than a field.
