DESCRIPTION:The recipes here are family recipes. That is the whole difference. When the German American Societies of San Diego throw their Oktoberfest\, the food and the beer and the music do not need theming\, because they are the real thing - handed down\, not designed for tourists who wanted a costume version of a Tuesday in Munich. The German American Heritage Center is not an event venue\; it is a place that exists to keep a community tethered to its own history\, and once a year that community opens its door to the rest of the city. The band plays this music because it belongs to them. The biergarten atmosphere is an actual tradition\, not a reconstruction of one. And the setting does something no other city's Oktoberfest can touch: Heritage Park\, ringed by Victorian architecture in the middle of Old Town\, gives the whole thing a specific San Diego character.
