What it was like

Smorgasburg Los Angeles runs every Sunday at Row DTLA in the Arts District — 80 to 100 food vendors spread across an open lot with downtown skyline views. It started in Brooklyn and landed in LA in 2016. The LA version skews toward vendors you have never heard of who are testing their first concept: smash burgers from a popup that has been selling out of a parking lot in Koreatown, birria ramen from a chef who used to run a Michelin kitchen, cheese bao from someone who will have a brick-and-mortar within two years. The market is how those businesses get their first real crowd.

The crowd itself is the product. Regulars come weekly. The mix is East LA creative, Arts District gallery people, tourists who found it on TikTok, and families who make it a Sunday ritual. Bring cash or a card — most vendors take both. Dogs are welcome and attend in significant numbers. Tables fill fast after 11am; come at 10 when vendors are still setting up and you can actually talk to the people making the food.

Hours: 10am to 4pm, Sundays year-round. Free entry. Parking in the Row DTLA structure on weekends. Metro accessible — Blue/Expo line to San Pedro St.

They believed the only thing better than a restaurant was a food market where the competition was visible and the best always came back. Smorgasburg Los Angeles has been proving that argument every Sunday at ROW DTLA, on the blocks south of the Arts District. The format is pure: dozens of food vendors under a canopy of tents in an open-air space designed for movement. You circle the whole market before you commit. You sample things you wouldn't order from a menu because the plate is right there and the vendor is watching you try it. The lineup rotates over time — vendors come and go based on who survived the previous week and who wants another shot — but the quality competition between stalls is constant. The roster includes vendors building followings that will eventually become restaurants. A Sunday at Smorgasburg is what the first month of a restaurant's existence looks like, compressed into one block and fifty simultaneous experiments. Free admission. First two hours of parking free in ROW DTLA lots. Every Sunday, 10 AM–4 PM. 777 S Alameda St, Los Angeles (ROW DTLA).

Smorgasburg Los Angeles runs every Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM at ROW DTLA, an open-air market and arts complex in the warehouse district south of the Arts District. The event is a West Coast outpost of the Brooklyn original — the largest weekly open-air food market in the country. On any given Sunday there are 50 to 80 food vendors, almost all of them small independent operations selling a single signature item. The variety is genuinely broad: Japanese milk bread, birria tacos, Nashville hot chicken, Hawaiian poke, Filipino ube desserts, Korean corn dogs, birria ramen, artisanal ice cream. Many vendors are pre-restaurant — this is where they test concepts before opening a brick-and-mortar. The complex also hosts design, vintage, and craft vendors alongside the food. Seating is spread across the open plaza. It operates rain or shine year-round. ROW DTLA is at 777 S Alameda St, Los Angeles. Parking is free on the property. Metro Gold Line Little Tokyo/Arts District station is a 10-minute walk. Admission is free. Budget $20–40 for food.
