DESCRIPTION:You have probably never actually seen the Milky Way. Most people who think they have were looking at a smudge through the glow of a city that never really goes dark. Out past Twentynine Palms the sky does something you cannot un-see: the band of the galaxy\, sharp\, horizon to horizon\, in a place kept deliberately unlit.\n\nFor three October nights\, astronomy clubs from across Southern California haul their telescopes into the desert and let strangers look through them. Photographers with serious glass work the astrophotography sessions. Park rangers run programs on what this sky meant to the Mojave and Sonoran peoples long before anyone thought to certify it as a dark sky park. Autumn is chosen on purpose — little moon\, steady air\, nights cool enough to stand outside for hours without wilting.\n\nSessions run in and around the national park near Twentynine Palms\, and the popular telescope slots fill early.\n\nBring the person who keeps saying they want to see stars someday.
