SUMMARY:Los Angeles Japanese Garden — Suikinkutsu Night 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Japanese Garden at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys hosts special evening events throughout the year that open the otherwise weekday-only public garden to visitors after dark. The Suikinkutsu Night events showcase the water harp — a traditional Japanese garden installation where water drips into an inverted ceramic vessel buried in the ground\, creating bell-like resonant tones that carry through the garden.\n\nThe Japanese Garden is one of the most overlooked destinations in the San Fernando Valley — a 6.5-acre authentic Japanese stroll garden built around a large central lake\, with tea house\, bonsai court\, dry garden\, and the suikinkutsu installation that gives the evening events their name. The garden was designed by Dr. Koichi Kawana\, the same landscape architect responsible for the Japanese Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden and Huntington Library.\n\nEvening events at the Japanese Garden are limited-capacity by design — the intimate nature of the garden means the experience degrades above a certain attendance number\, and the organizers maintain the integrity of the visit. Advance reservation is strongly recommended for all evening programs.\n\nThe garden is located at 6100 Woodley Ave in Van Nuys. Parking on-site in the water reclamation plant parking area. The evening events typically include a docent-led tour of the garden's design principles\, tea ceremony demonstration\, and time to experience the suikinkutsu installation. Check the LA Japanese Garden website for 2026 evening event dates.
