DESCRIPTION:In July\, the California sun and the Pacific breeze align\, and Del Mar becomes something that has no modern equivalent. The Thoroughbred Club has been running here since 1937 — Bing Crosby's track\, the one that invented the idea that horse racing could be a vacation. The horses are faster now. The fashion is different. The two-minute races that draw 40\,000 people on opening weekend\, at a place where the grandstand faces the sea\, work the same way they always did.\n\nOpening Day is a social ritual as much as a sporting event. The crowd in the infield and the crowd in the stands are doing different things — one is watching the horses\, one is watching each other — and both are exactly right. Del Mar is where people who haven't been to a race since they were twelve realize they've been missing something.\n\nGeneral admission starts at $6. The horses go Wednesdays through Sundays from Opening Day through Labor Day weekend. Dress is technically casual\, practically aspirational.
