In downtown Santa Ana\, the beating heart of Latino Orange County\, that moment is the center of the largest Fiestas Patrias in the region\, now in its forty-fifth year. El Grito de Independencia goes up Saturday night on the main stage\, and around it sprawls everything a Mexican independence celebration should be: folklórico dancers\, banda and mariachi\, carnival rides\, street food that smells like a hundred family kitchens\, a Sunday parade down Main Street. This is not a themed weekend\; it is a community throwing itself its own birthday party.
