The lamps come up gold along El Prado\, the museums throw their doors open for nothing\, and hundreds of thousands of people wander the same paths at the same unhurried pace with cocoa in hand and nowhere in particular to be.\n\nThis is the largest free holiday festival in California\, and it does something no ticketed spectacle can manage: it turns a sprawling metropolis back into a village for two nights. Choirs spill out of the organ pavilion. The International Cottages serve food from thirty nations. Kids press their faces to the museum glass after dark\, when the halls feel like somewhere they were let into by accident.\n\nYou do not come to see one particular thing. You come to be reminded that the whole park\, and the whole city with it\, belongs to everyone at once — and that you were always counted in that.\n\nBring whoever needs reminding.
