SUMMARY:Athenaeum Summer Festival 2026 — Gustavo Romero Plays Liszt in La Jolla
DESCRIPTION:The room holds maybe two hundred people. The piano holds everything else.\n\nFor twenty-seven summers\, the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla has opened its doors on Sunday afternoons for a concert series that refuses to grow. No amphitheater upgrade. No livestream. No VIP tier. Just a pianist\, a Steinway\, and an audience close enough to hear the pedal mechanism.\n\nThis year\, virtuoso Gustavo Romero dedicates the entire four-week series to the piano music of Franz Liszt — the composer who invented the concept of the rock star a century before electricity. Romero has the technique to play the transcendental etudes and the restraint to make the late nocturnes whisper. Across Sundays in July (12\, 19\, and 26)\, the program moves through Liszt’s full emotional architecture.\n\nDoors open at 3:30pm. Seating is first-come\, first-served — no tickets\, your name goes on a list at the door. After the first and last concerts\, dinner is offered at the Athenaeum\, catered by Girard Gourmet — a chance to eat with the pianist and the twenty strangers who just shared something unrepeatable.\n\nThe Athenaeum sits at 1008 Wall Street in La Jolla\, one block from the ocean. You can hear the waves between movements if the room is quiet enough. It usually is.
