DESCRIPTION:Every family has a recipe that nobody wrote down because writing it down would mean admitting it could be lost. The San Diego Soul Food Fest is what happens when a whole neighborhood brings those recipes out of the kitchen and onto the street.\n\nOn August 1st\, North Park fills with vendors from across the Black culinary diaspora -- not just the American South\, but the full spectrum of traditions that traveled\, adapted\, and survived. Jerk chicken from a family that brought the recipe from Kingston. Gumbo from a vendor whose grandmother's grandmother cooked it by feel. Mac and cheese that does not need a competition because it already won the one that matters: the one at home.\n\nGeneral admission gets you through the door to browse vendors\, catch live entertainment\, and hear an author interview. Tasting tickets add three samples from any vendor you choose -- enough to start an argument about whose was best. The fest runs from 11 AM to 4 PM\, compact enough to feel like a block party\, not a production.\n\nWhat makes this different from a food truck rally: the people who show up already know each other. This is a community that cooks for community\, and the fest is the one day a year the whole neighborhood eats together in public. Bring cash for the vendors who do not take cards\, and do not fill up at the first booth.
