DESCRIPTION:The wax is still soft when the first heat paddles out at dawn\, and by the time the pier shadow shifts\, the sand will be packed with people who came for the surfing and stayed for the community that built itself around it.\n\nThe 41st Annual Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest and Beach Festival brings together some of the best longboard surfers in the world at the Oceanside Pier — not in some sanitized stadium format\, but right there on the sand where the pier meets the water\, where you can smell the wax and hear the judges and feel the salt on your arms before the first heat is called.\n\nThe 41st Annual Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest and Beach Festival brings together some of the best longboard surfers in the world at the Oceanside Pier — not in some sanitized stadium format\, but right there on the sand where the pier meets the water\, where you can smell the wax and hear the judges and feel the salt on your arms before the first heat is called.\n\nThis is not a mainstream surf competition. This is the longboard community's homecoming. Surfers travel from Hawaii to Santa Cruz to compete for handcrafted trophies and $5\,000 per division — but the real currency is the respect of a community that has been doing this for four decades. The beach festival runs alongside the contest with live music\, vendors\, and the kind of crowd that treats the pier like a living room.\n\nAdmission is free. The contest runs August 7-9 at the Oceanside Pier. Bring a chair\, bring sunscreen\, and bring the friend who always talks about learning to surf but never does. This might be the weekend that changes their mind.
