SUMMARY:Dia de los Muertos at Old Town San Diego 2026
DESCRIPTION:Old Town San Diego becomes something else on the first days of November. The adobe walls that usually frame a historic district become the backdrop for one of the largest Dia de los Muertos celebrations in Southern California — three days of altars\, papel picado\, marigolds\, and the kind of remembrance that is equal parts grief and gratitude. The ofrendas fill the plazas. Families build them for the people they lost\, and strangers stop to read the names and the stories\, and for a few minutes the distance between here and gone gets very small. The face painting alone draws lines — calavera designs done by artists who've been doing this for years. The traditional music fills the courtyard. The food vendors serve pan de muerto and tamales and champurrado that you can smell from two blocks away. This is not a Halloween event. It is older than Halloween\, and it runs deeper\, and if you've never been you should know that the sadness and the celebration are the same thing. November 1-2. Free. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
