What came out of that room was a rhythm so contagious it rewrote what American music was allowed to do next\, and everything after it — salsa\, boogaloo\, Latin jazz\, three decades of New York nightlife — traces back to that afternoon.\n\nSo this is not a tribute in the polite sense. It is a big band aiming that collision straight at a waterfront crowd. Gilbert Castellanos is the city's preeminent jazz trumpet voice\, the KSDS orchestra is its resident big band\, and together they are built exactly for this: horns stacked\, congas out front\, the thing that made the original recording feel genuinely dangerous.\n\nOutdoors on the bay at the shell\, in early September\, when the evenings finally cool off.\n\nBring somebody who thinks jazz is background music. This is the night that opinion dies.
