DESCRIPTION:Late January arrives carrying a smell you cannot name and a drum pattern that lands in your chest a half-second before your brain catches up to it. If you grew up around this\, your body already knows what week it is. If you did not\, you are about to understand why people drive an hour for a street that smells like this.\n\nFive blocks of Garvey Avenue close to traffic and the San Gabriel Valley turns itself inside out. Lion dance troupes work the street storefront by storefront\, and this is the part outsiders miss: they are not performing for the crowd. They are blessing the businesses. Shopkeepers hang heads of lettuce and red envelopes above their doorways for the lion to reach up and eat\, and the whole block stops to watch a paper animal get fed. Grandmothers hold folding chairs. Kids run the vendor rows with red envelopes they are not supposed to open yet.\n\nThis is the largest Chinese-American community in the country celebrating the turn of its own year\, in its own neighborhood\, at full volume.
