DESCRIPTION:Recorded music solved availability and quietly broke something else: almost nobody now hears a band that learned to play by being heard on a sidewalk. This one did. They built an audience busking on Royal Street in New Orleans\, playing repertoire mostly older than 1930 — rags\, blues\, string-band tunes pulled off shellac — with no amplification and no setlist\, reading the crowd in front of them. That habit survives the move indoors. The washboard and the cornet do the arguing\; the tuba holds the floor. There is no click track and there is no screen. Out here the room is a wood-floored saloon in the high desert where the audience is a mix of Joshua Tree locals\, weekenders who came for the rocks and stayed for the music\, and a few people who drove two hours specifically for this. Music at 8:00 PM in Pioneertown. Get there early enough to eat — the kitchen is the other half of why people make this drive\, and the line for it forms before the band does.
