SUMMARY:The Slackers
DESCRIPTION:Ska got flattened in this country into one joke about horns and checkerboard\, which is an unfair fate for a form that is mostly about restraint — the space between the notes is the whole instrument. This band has spent three decades quietly proving it\, working closer to Jamaican rocksteady and early reggae than to anything that happened in a nineties American suburb\, with an organ player who is the actual center of the sound. They tour relentlessly and have for so long that the crowd spans about thirty years of ages\, all of whom know when to move and when to stand still. The Ventura room is flat-floored with a proper dancefloor in front of the stage\, which this music requires. Music at 9:00 PM on East Thompson Boulevard. Bands that never stopped touring build a different kind of audience — one that shows up for the eleventh time and brings somebody who has never been.
