DESCRIPTION:Anger delivered calmly lands harder than anger shouted\, and Leah Wellbaum has built a whole catalog on that principle — jazz-schooled guitar playing underneath lyrics about dissociation and dogs and being unwell\, sung almost conversationally. The band came out of a conservatory background\, which explains why the chord voicings keep doing something odd under what appear to be straightforward rock songs. Their listeners are notably intense about it\; this is music people found during a bad year and have not let go of since. A Tuesday in a desert saloon is a strange booking for that kind of catharsis and probably a better one than a city club\, since the drive home gives you somewhere to put it. Music at 9:00 PM in Pioneertown\, out past Yucca Valley. The people who make this drive on a weeknight for a band this size are exactly the crowd worth standing next to.
