DESCRIPTION:Country songs written by somebody who clearly grew up on punk records land differently — the phrasing is off in the right ways\, the jokes are meaner\, and the sad ones do not ask permission. Ballgame works that seam\, playing what is nominally honky-tonk to rooms that are mostly not country audiences and winning them anyway. The band is tight in the way bar bands get tight\, from playing constantly rather than rehearsing. There is a real Los Angeles country scene right now\, mostly operating out of a handful of eastside rooms\, and it is one of the more genuinely surprising things happening in this city musically. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic hall is one of the rooms where it surfaces. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56\, a Thursday. Anyone who follows this particular scene will tell you the bills change constantly and the same eighty people are always there.
