DESCRIPTION:Playing music from the 1930s without it becoming a costume party requires knowing the material well enough to be careless with it\, and that is the line this performer has walked for two decades — ragtime\, western swing\, early country\, delivered by somebody who is genuinely funny on stage and not remotely precious about the history. The band swings hard. There is a real revival of pre-war American music happening at the moment\, driven largely by younger players\, and he has been doing it since before that was a scene to join. Live he talks to the room constantly. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic hall has the wood and the warmth for it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56\, a Saturday in December. The people who follow this music go to a lot of these nights and tend to know one another by sight.
