DESCRIPTION:Calling your own music ecstatic black metal is a provocation aimed squarely at a genre built on misery\, and the Los Angeles band making that claim has largely gotten away with it — the tremolo picking and the shrieking are all present\, arranged toward transcendence rather than despair. It is genuinely strange and genuinely joyful\, which almost nothing in this style is. They have become one of the more talked-about heavy bands to come out of this city in years\, largely through live performance rather than press. Halloween night in a high desert saloon\, wooden floor\, low ceiling\, cold outside and a patio full of people between sets\, is an unimprovable setting for it. Music at 9:00 PM in Pioneertown. Heavy music in Southern California has a long desert lineage\, and nights like this are where the current generation connects itself to it.
