DESCRIPTION:You have seen the horses on New Year's morning and you have never once seen them up close. They pass in a blur of silver saddle and braided mane somewhere between a marching band and a float made of seaweed\, and then they are gone and the broadcast cuts to a commercial. The horses get a day of their own\, three days early\, in Burbank. Charro riders work the reata. Escaramuza teams ride sidesaddle in formation at a gallop\, which is the sort of thing you have to watch twice to believe. Drill teams thread patterns that only make sense from the top of the bleachers. Trick riders do the thing where they go under the horse. What makes it worth the drive is the part the parade cannot show you: the barn area\, where the animals stand around being enormous and patient while riders in full regalia adjust tack and argue about nothing. There is a vendor court and food. December 29\, ten in the morning until three.
