SUMMARY:Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2027 - Pebble Beach\, CA
DESCRIPTION:On the third Sunday of August\, somebody drives a car worth more than a house onto a golf course that is worth more than a street\, and a man in a blazer kneels down to see whether the underside of the chassis has been restored to the correct shade of a colour nobody will ever look at.\n\nThe Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is the most serious car show in the world and the seventy-sixth running lands on Sunday\, August 15\, 2027. Concours judging is not a beauty contest in the way the photographs suggest. Cars are assessed against how they left the factory\, which means a restoration can lose for being too good\, and owners genuinely argue about whether a period-correct imperfection was reproduced faithfully. The winner is announced on the eighteenth fairway with the Pacific directly behind it\, and grown adults cry.\n\nWhat people underestimate is that the Concours is the Sunday finale of an entire week. Monterey Car Week fills the peninsula from early August: the Motoring Classic drives down from Seattle\, the auctions run Wednesday through Saturday and regularly set world records\, and the Tour d'Elegance on the Thursday takes the entrants out onto public roads around Carmel and down Highway One. The Tour is free to watch and is\, by consensus of people who go every year\, better than the show itself. Standing on a corner in Carmel watching a pre-war Bugatti actually being driven beats any number of stationary cars on grass.\n\nThe 2027 classes include Delages marking the centennial of their Grand Prix-winning season\, prewar open-front town cars\, a class of Delahayes\, and forty years of the Ferrari F40 - which is the one that will draw the people who grew up with that poster on a bedroom wall.\n\nNearly everyone reading this will experience the Concours as photographs in the following week. That is fine\, and it is most of the audience. But the lawn is open to anyone who buys a ticket\, the cars are a few feet away with no barriers\, and the owners will talk to you about them. For one Sunday a year\, the most rarefied objects in the automotive world stand on wet grass in the fog where you can get close enough to see your own reflection.
