DESCRIPTION:Some records only work after midnight\, and a surprising number of them were made by the same producer\, in the same reverb\, for people who drive home alone on purpose. That sound has a label behind it and a congregation that mostly found it through a television show and then went far deeper than the show ever did. Hearing it played live is strange in a good way: the music was built to feel like a memory\, so watching it get assembled in front of you breaks the spell and hands you something better in its place. The room will be dark and almost nobody will dance\, which is exactly right. This is the San Diego night of the run\, a couple of days after the desert one. Seven on Sunday on El Cajon Boulevard\, around $30. The synth-and-sadness scene down here is small enough to be a social circle\, and it keeps a handful of nights alive all year.
