DESCRIPTION:Twenty years is an absurd run for a band whose most recognisable member is a man in a goblin costume\, and the joke stopped being the point somewhere around year eight. What is left is a group that can genuinely play\, writing melodic death metal with keyboard parts that have no business working\, fronted by a mascot who has his own merchandise line and arguably more name recognition than the band. The anniversary framing means a set drawn from the whole run rather than whatever is newest. Pair that with a Belgian death metal band on support who are considerably less funny and significantly heavier\, and the night has a proper shape to it. Six on Sunday on South Hill Street downtown. Los Angeles has a deep metal underground that mostly operates outside the places people look\, and anniversary shows are when a good slice of it turns up at once.
