SUMMARY:45th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Parade — San Diego
DESCRIPTION:A parade on the Sunday of a long weekend is a different animal to one on the holiday itself. Nobody is there because the office shut. Everyone standing on Harbor Drive at eleven in the morning chose it over a lie-in\, which changes what the thing feels like from the kerb.\n\nForty-five years in\, it is run by the Zeta Sigma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha — Dr King's own fraternity — and the make-up of it is the point: high school marching bands\, drill teams\, divine nine step squads\, churches\, union locals\, youth organisations and the kind of community floats that took a garage six weekends to build. The step squads are what people film.\n\nIt runs south along Harbor Drive from Ash to Pacific Highway with the water on one side\, which is a strange and good place to watch a parade.\n\nSunday January 17\, 2027\, 11am. Free to stand and watch.
