SUMMARY:Slothrust: The Dystopian Theatre Tour
DESCRIPTION:A guitarist who can clearly play far more than the songs require\, deliberately holding back\, is one of the more satisfying things to watch. The playing here comes out of jazz and blues training and gets deployed inside songs that are structurally pop and lyrically very dry\, so the whole thing sits at an angle to everything around it. Lines land as jokes and then turn out to be the saddest part. That combination attracts a particular listener: people who want to be entertained and are not willing to be condescended to. The live version is heavier than the recordings and the between-song talk is unusually funny\, which catches out anybody who came expecting a serious evening based on the album art. Worth it for the moment mid-set when the restraint drops for about thirty seconds and you understand what has been held back the whole time.
