DESCRIPTION:One man and an acoustic guitar is the oldest format there is and the easiest to do badly\, which makes the handful of people who can hold a thousand-seat room alone genuinely remarkable to watch. The voice does most of the work: cracked\, insistent\, pitched slightly higher than seems sustainable\, and used as a rhythm instrument as much as a melodic one. Songs about distance and weather and leaving\, delivered with an urgency that studio recordings flatten. Between numbers the tuning takes a while and the talk is funnier than the material would suggest. This is a show where the room goes properly silent\, which is increasingly hard to find and worth seeking out deliberately. Go on your own if that appeals\; a lot of the audience will have done the same.
