SUMMARY:Anaheim Ducks vs. New Jersey Devils
DESCRIPTION:Nobody has ever regretted having somewhere to be on New Year's Day. The alternative is the sofa\, the slow horror of the first afternoon of a new year\, and a vague plan to be better that has already started badly. A one o'clock face-off fixes the whole problem: you are up\, you are out\, and you are among several thousand people who made exactly the same decision and are quietly pleased with themselves about it. Afternoon hockey on a holiday has a particular warmth to it - daylight in the concourse\, a crowd that skews heavily towards families\, everybody slightly fragile and unusually cheerful. New Jersey is the opponent\, which carries no local grudge whatsoever and is therefore perfect\; nothing is being avenged and nobody is shouting about history. Start the year with an actual plan rather than an intention. The rest of January tends to go better when the first day had something in it.
