SUMMARY:AJC Peachtree Road Race 2027 — Atlanta\, GA
DESCRIPTION:Somewhere around mile three of a ten-kilometre race on the Fourth of July\, fifty-five thousand people climb a hill past a hospital in ninety-degree Georgia humidity\, and a nurse on the lawn sprays them with a hose\, and almost everybody laughs. That hill has a name — Cardiac Hill — and surviving it is the closest thing Atlanta has to a civic sacrament. The AJC Peachtree Road Race takes place on July 4\, 2027\, running from Lenox Square in Buckhead down Peachtree Road to a finish in Piedmont Park. It is the largest 10K in the world\, and it has been run since 1970\, when a hundred and ten people showed up.\n\nThe atmosphere is nothing like a marathon. A marathon is a private ordeal performed in public\; this is a parade that happens to be timed. Residents set up on their front lawns with sprinklers and speakers. Church groups hand out water. Somebody is always grilling by eight in the morning. The field is so large that it starts in waves over more than an hour\, which means the person crossing the line first and the person crossing it last are having two unrelated experiences on the same road. Elite Kenyan and Ethiopian runners finish in under twenty-eight minutes\; a man in a flag cape walks it with his daughter on his shoulders.\n\nWorth it? If you want a personal record\, run something else — the heat and the crowding make this a poor course for a fast time\, and everyone who knows the race accepts that. It is worth it if you want to understand a Southern city in a single morning\, or if you have ever wanted a reason to be awake and outside and sweating with strangers on a national holiday rather than watching fireworks on a screen. It is not a race for people who need space.\n\nWhat to know before you go: entry is by lottery\, with general and member registration opening in spring 2027\, and it fills. The finisher T-shirt is the entire point for most of the field — the design is kept secret until the finish line\, you cannot buy one\, and you only receive it by actually completing the course\, which is why you will see people in twenty-year-old Peachtree shirts all over Georgia. Hydrate the day before rather than the morning of\, and take MARTA\; parking at Lenox on race morning is not a plan. Wave assignments and exact start times are published closer to the race.\n\nFalkor lists it because a road race that became a city's Fourth of July tradition is a better picture of America than most things with fireworks attached. The lottery opens in the spring\, and the only souvenir worth having is the one you cannot buy.
