DESCRIPTION:By the fourth week of December almost everything available to do has curdled into obligation\, and the two nights nobody schedules anything at all are the twenty-third and the twenty-fourth. That is precisely when a company in Pasadena is still performing\, which is the useful fact here. A Noise Within has been a resident classical company since 1991 — meaning the same ensemble of actors works together across a whole season rather than being assembled per production — and that shows up in a Dickens adaptation more than almost anywhere else\, because Carol is a story carried by a crowd. The Cratchits\, the mourners\, the people at Fezziwig's party: when those are played by actors who have been onstage together since autumn\, the town feels like a town instead of a chorus. The room on East Foothill is small enough that Marley's entrance is genuinely startling rather than a lighting cue you watch. Take the relative who complains about everything\; this is the one they will not complain about. Performances run through Christmas Eve\, Pasadena\, evenings and matinees.
