SUMMARY:The Importance of Being Earnest
DESCRIPTION:A woman asks a young man where he comes from and he admits he was found\, as an infant\, in a handbag at Victoria Station. She repeats the word back at him — just the one word — and a hundred and thirty years later it is still the biggest laugh in English comedy. Nothing about Wilde has aged\, which is genuinely strange given that the play is about inheritance law and calling cards\, and the reason is that he was never actually writing about those. He was writing about how much effort it takes to be respectable and how funny it is when the effort shows. South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa won a Tony for being a regional theatre back in 1988 and has spent the decades since mostly developing new work\, so watching them take a warhorse is its own kind of interesting — a company that usually premieres things doing the most produced comedy in the language. The run goes nine weeks\, deep into a stretch of the calendar where Orange County offers almost nothing on a weeknight. Costa Mesa\, from the twenty-third of January.
