About

The son of flamenco legend Paco de Lucia brings raw Andalusian passion to a Temecula stage - guitar, voice, percussion, and the kind of performance that reminds you exactly why flamenco was named a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Flamenco does not translate to a recording the way most music does; the form is built on the tension between performer and room, the sudden acceleration, the held silence, the sense that what you are hearing is being decided in the moment rather than played back. The California Tower goes dark against the August sky, and below it, a lawn full of strangers settles in for two hours of something they did not plan. The San Diego Museum of Art sets up the screen on the Botanical Garden Lawn, and by sundown the grass is a quilt of blankets and camp chairs and families who carried their dinner in a tote bag because they know the drill. The films change weekly — sometimes a classic, sometimes a crowd-pleaser — but the real draw is the night itself: the silhouette of the California Tower behind the screen, the kids who fall asleep before the second act, the couples who came for the movie and stayed for the quiet walk back through the park after the credits roll. Grab sandwiches from Panama 66's Grab and Go before it closes at sundown. Arrive early for the Lovesac Lounge giveaway if you want the best seat in the house. Free admission. In Eagle Rock, the video store never died; it grew a marquee. Maggie Mackay gave Los Angeles a room where the movie theater and the video store are finally the same thing — the kind of place where the people who built the shelves in the 1990s could be the people programming the screen now. So Vidiots operates the Eagle Theatre in Eagle Rock, a nearly century-old movie house with a 271-seat auditorium that runs 35mm and 16mm and digital. The In the Eagle series is the weekly repertory programming — classics, hard-to-find features, new indie releases, the rare screening you would have driven to a different city for ten years ago. The conversation happening outside the theater is as essential as the film inside it - filmmakers, producers, actors, cultural critics, and a deeply engaged audience share one island for nine days, and geography forces the kind of creative cross-pollination that does not happen anywhere else. For nine days every August, this festival screens work the mainstream circuit does not reach, with the Atlantic as the backdrop. The setting is not incidental. Martha's Vineyard has been a gathering place for Black families, artists, and intellectuals since the 19th century, and the communities of Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven carry that history into the festival. Films premiere here before wider release. Q and A sessions run long because the audience has real questions. This is for the film lover who stays through the credits, wants to know what the director was fighting for, and discovers something in August they will still be talking about in December. If you watch the Oscars wondering why certain stories are never in the conversation, this festival has been telling those stories for twenty-four years - not a place for passive consumption, but for people who care about film as a cultural force and want to see stories that do not get greenlit often enough, told by people who lived versions of them. Art on Ocean shuts down Ocean Avenue beside Palisades Park and fills it with more than 100 artists — painters hauling easels past crosswalks, ceramicists whose work you can hold and turn in the salt air, jewelers and sculptors and photographers who all decided to show up on the same Saturday in August. Kids paint at open studios run by Paint Lab, with free art workshops for all ages. Food trucks line the sidewalk — Blue Plate Taco, Triple Beam Pizza, Ubatuba Açaí. A wine garden materializes beside the bluff. Then, as the light drops, a movie screen goes up in the park and the whole avenue watches a film under the trees. It's free. It's all-ages.
