Eighteen days at Lincoln Center in the fall. The New York Film Festival has been selecting films without competitive categories since 1963 — no awards, just the films the programmers decided mattered this year. The Main Slate premieres at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center — a 1,000-seat hall with some of the best sight lines and acoustics of any cinema venue in America. The post-screening Q&As with directors and cast are NYFF's most distinctive feature: these are not promotional appearances. They are genuine conversations about how films get made, what they mean, and what the filmmakers were reaching toward. The press conference format becomes, in the right moment, something more interesting than either party expected. The festival also programs a parallel section, Convergence, dedicated to experiential and experimental work, and a Revivals series that presents restored classic films alongside the new work. There is no membership, no reservation, no blanket application — you just show up in the middle of downtown Los Angeles and a movie is playing on twelve acres of park that runs from City Hall to the Music Center. That kind of open, unguarded public space is exactly what cities claim to want and almost never sustain. Grand Park has sustained it for over a decade. On summer evenings the park hosts free outdoor movies, and the audience is downtown LA in cross-section: workers who stayed late and found a reason to stay later, people who walked over from Pershing Square, families from Boyle Heights and Chinatown and Echo Park who treat Grand Park as a weekend destination, tourists who did not know this existed. Beyond the movies, the park runs free concerts, fitness events, and cultural celebrations through summer and fall. You have watched every horror movie this year alone on a couch, pausing to check whether anyone else saw that. Here nobody has to check. A whole theater flinches on the same frame, somebody three rows back laughs at exactly the wrong moment, and the laugh turns out to be the best part of the night. For two weeks every fall, the genre crowd of Los Angeles moves into the Egyptian and the Aero and treats premieres like prizefights, with the filmmakers on stage afterward and late shows that start at 10:15 because nobody in this room is going home early. The regulars buy the marathons first. This year a Robert Eggers all-dayer sold out before most people finished reading the lineup, and opening night went with it. Most of these films will reach a streamer eventually. None of them will play to this room again, and the stranger beside you in the lobby already has a list of the next ten things you have to see. Grass under a blanket, somebody's dog wandering the row, and a kid down front narrating the plot to nobody in particular. Half the neighborhood is out here and not one of them paid anything to be. Somebody decided that every part of this city deserved at least one summer evening of a movie outdoors under an actual sky, and then went and did it, park by park, year after year. The format is the whole idea: find the screening closest to you, bring something to sit on, arrive before dark. No seats to reserve, no venue with opinions about your shoes. Just a park turning into a theater for a few hours because people wanted somewhere good to be. The lineup runs wide enough that something is always worth the trip — a recent release, an old one, something the kids have not seen. Rotating locations from July into October, free. Find the one nearest you and tell your neighbors. That is genuinely all it takes.

George Lucas spent decades assembling a museum for narrative art and opened it in Exposition Park this September with more than thirty installations and over twelve hundred objects, running from ancient gods through Renaissance painting to comics. This is the cinema room: vehicle designs, costumes and illustrations from the first six films, including General Grievous's wheel bike built as a physical object for the first time ever, having only existed as animation until now. Entry is timed and booked ahead, twenty-five dollars for adults, free for anyone seventeen or under. One Lucas Plaza on South Vermont, and it is one of the few big rooms in this city open on a Monday morning.

The Headless Horseman is the 1922 silent film adaptation of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” starring Will Rogers as Ichabod Crane — yes, that Will Rogers, before he became the most famous man in America. The film has not been widely screened in decades. You are watching it the way it was meant to be watched: in the dark, in a theater built in 1924, with a live organist scoring every gallop and every shadow in real time. This is the Season Three premiere of Silent Movie Mondays, a series that runs seven films through the fall. Somebody in your life keeps insisting the seventies were better and you have never once had the ammunition to argue back. Here is your evening. Grizzly is the one where a fifteen-foot bear works its way through a national park while the studio lawyers presumably explained the difference between this and a shark, and it commits to the bit with a sincerity nobody would risk now. Then the night gets genuinely strange. The Manitou is about a woman who grows a tumour on her neck that turns out to be a reincarnating four-hundred-year-old medicine man, and it ends, with total confidence, in outer space. Both screen on 35mm, which means the print carries scratches, the reel changes are audible, and the crowd cheers the splices instead of wincing at them. Monday, October 5 on Beverly Boulevard, first film at 7:30pm and the second at 9:30pm. Nobody streams these. That is rather the point of the room.

Some films are frightening. This one is worse, because it is about the sensation of being present at your own life and unable to make contact with any of it. A woman walks out of a river after a car goes off a bridge, takes a job playing church organ in a town where nobody quite meets her eye, and keeps being drawn toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. It was shot in three weeks in 1962 by a man who otherwise made industrial and educational films, on almost no money, with a cast of non-professionals, and that accidental amateurism is precisely why it works: nothing behaves the way a studio picture teaches you to expect. The organ score does most of the damage. Directors have been quietly stealing from it ever since, usually without saying so. Monday, October 5 at 7:30pm in Eagle Rock. It runs seventy-eight minutes and it follows people home.

Discs you will probably never play again, some of them scratched, a few of them still shrink-wrapped, all of them heavier than the streaming library that replaced them. You keep it because a menu that can change overnight is not the same as owning a thing. This is a night for people who feel that in their chest. The room goes dark and what comes up is 35mm - actual film, actual grain, actual splices - pulled from the strangest corners of the space-movie canon and programmed by people who treat physical media as a moral position rather than a hobby. Psychedelic, funny, deeply weird, and assembled specifically to be seen alongside other people who will gasp at the same cut. A detail the regulars know: the Eagle Theatre is a restored 1929 house, and the projectionist runs it hot and loud on purpose. Film students talk about fog the way sommeliers talk about soil, and this is the double bill that explains why. Two Japanese masterpieces run back to back, and both use weather as a moral condition. Kurosawa moved Macbeth into feudal Japan and shot the forest until it stopped being scenery and started being fate, and the ending remains the most alarming thing anybody has ever accomplished with archery. Mizoguchi's Ugetsu follows two peasants who leave their wives to chase money and glory during a civil war and find something considerably worse, filmed in long unbroken takes that drift like somebody remembering rather than somebody watching. Seeing them in one sitting, on 35mm, in a room where several hundred people gasp at the same frame, is a completely different event from queueing them at home and pausing for snacks. Pierce built a whole career in that gap, and both halves of this bill come from him. The Town That Dreaded Sundown reconstructs the Texarkana Moonlight Murders in a docudrama register so flat and matter-of-fact that the violence keeps arriving before you have braced for it, and the trombone scene has been quietly disturbing people for fifty years. The Evictors is the quieter one, a slow Louisiana property-dispute nightmare that is really about how a house remembers what happened in it. Pierce shot on location with local faces rather than a studio backlot, which is exactly why the films feel like somebody handed you a rumour instead of a script.
