Around the twenty-minute mark the children stop squirming and go completely still, because someone standing on a stage built out of nothing is saying something that somehow lands. That is the moment people come back for. Eight hundred people spread blankets in the ruins of the old zoo, open the wine, and watch Shakespeare under open sky for nothing at all. Independent Shakespeare Co. has been doing it for over two decades. No tickets, no assigned seats, no walls — just actors and language and the specific magic of a story written four hundred years ago making strangers in a Los Angeles park laugh at the same instant. The season runs two productions, a taut political thriller and a music-filled comedy of mistaken identity, Wednesday through Sunday evenings. Nobody ever builds the good version of this for people who want their evening back. Everything worth dancing to starts at nine and ends when you have to be at work in six hours. So a roomful of dancers quietly moved the whole thing to Sunday afternoon and never looked back. West Coast and East Coast both welcome, four hours long, the early stretch leaving room for instruction and the rest given over to social dancing across a spread of tempos. The regulars have been at it for years, which sounds intimidating and is actually the entire point — the floor level is high enough that a newcomer learns more standing at the edge watching than in any beginner class. That gradient is how the club has sustained itself. No partner required. Lessons if you want them. And the building is air-conditioned, which in July is reason enough on its own. Come alone. You will not stay that way for long.

Most scenes depend on somebody deciding it is worth running this month. This one just shows up, every Thursday, and has since 1998. That reliability is the whole engineering trick. Because the floor is dependable, the good dancers keep coming; because the good dancers are there, the first-timers learn from people who are genuinely excellent; because first-timers keep arriving, the floor never calcifies into a closed club. Twenty-five years of that loop has made it the largest weekly swing dance in San Diego. Classes run 7 to 8 PM — beginner Lindy Hop, included with entry. Social dancing 8 to 11. Live bands when the calendar allows. The venue is a dedicated dance space, not a bar that shoves its tables aside at nine. History handed these women a single line each, usually somebody else's surname, and then closed the book. Jaclyn Backhaus reopens it and lets them talk. Four wildly different centuries collide across the evening, Hemingway's Paris and a Mughal court and a Welsh boarding school among them, and the women who were furniture in those stories take the furniture apart. It is loud and it is very funny and it turns serious about ten minutes before you expect it to. East West Players has been doing this in Little Tokyo for sixty-one years, longer than any theater of colour in the country, and this season they moved the entire company to pay-what-you-will pricing, so the barrier is whatever you decide it is. The rarity worth knowing: they play Mondays, October 19 and 26 at 7:30pm, which almost nobody in this city does. The run closes November 1 on Judge John Aiso Street.

Somewhere between twenty-two and now, most people packed the dark music away with the clothes that went with it. A few never did, and once a month they find each other on Broadway without having to explain a single thing to anybody. Obscene is a DTLA night for goth, industrial, EBM and darkwave, run by residents Industria Nova and Damascus Knives, who play the whole span of it rather than the four songs everyone knows. There are vendors, which tells you what kind of night it actually is — people come early, buy something, stay. It is free at the door and twenty-one and up, and free matters here: it means the room fills with people who came for the music rather than people protecting a fifty-dollar decision. The Slipper Clutch is small and low and red. You will be standing closer to the booth than you are used to. Thursday, October 22. Nine p.m. until two. 351 South Broadway. Halfway through you stop being able to tell which of the two men the sound is coming from, and that confusion is the entire point rather than a side effect. Hainaux works as a beatboxer the way a percussionist works, building rhythm out of breath and lip and throat with no instrument anywhere in the room. Chaignaud is a dancer who sings while asking his body to do things that ought to make singing physically impossible, and he has spent a career refusing to let audiences separate the voice from the labour that produces it. A mirliton is the little reed pipe handed to children at carnival, the kind that sounds nearly like a human voice and never quite gets there, which is a fair warning about what these two are after. Two nights only, in a room small enough to hear the breath between phrases. October 23 and 24 at 8 PM, the Nimoy on Westwood.

You used to go to shows. Then you had a kid, and the math stopped working — the babysitter, the 9 PM doors, the guilt either way. That trade is the ache this fixes, and it fixes it by refusing the premise. A live band plays the songs at real volume through the real PA, and the floor stays empty of chairs on purpose so that the children can move however they want during it. Nobody shushes anybody. Parents end up dancing harder than the kids, which everyone pretends not to notice. The format has run for years in rooms like this one and the unwritten rule is that you arrive early enough to claim floor space near the stage, because the front two rows are where the four-year-olds organize themselves into something resembling a pit. The Highland Park hall has a balcony for anyone who needs to sit down and watch it happen. Music at 11:30 AM, all ages, upstairs at 104 N Avenue 56. It runs most months with a different songbook, so the families who come once tend to come back.

Monday is the night nothing happens, which is exactly when it is worth watching people work without a net. Somebody in the audience shouts a title for a play that has never existed, and the cast performs a full-length Shakespearean version of it on the spot — five acts, mistaken identities, a death scene, verse invented on the fly by people who have to rhyme their way out of corners they built ninety seconds earlier. The failures are the best part. An actor gets stranded mid-couplet, and you can watch the others silently decide whether to rescue him or let him hang there one beat longer because it is funnier. They almost always let him hang. Mark Flanagan asks you to leave your phone at home or in the car, and he means it, so no clip of the collapse exists. The play was never written down to begin with, which means the thing you sit through will never be performed again, by anyone, in any city. You left the neighborhood to find yourself and came back fluent in a language nobody at home speaks. That ache has a soundtrack now, and it has taken almost twenty years to reach the city it was written about. Stew's rock musical follows a kid from South Central who runs to Amsterdam and Berlin chasing the real, and discovers the thing he was running from was the only honest material he had. It won the Tony for its book and became the show people quote at each other in parking lots, and somehow Los Angeles never staged it until now. Zhailon Levingston directs a live band onstage rather than tucked in a pit, so the guitar is a character with opinions. Opening night falls on a Wednesday, November 4 at 7:30pm, which Pasadena Playhouse runs as Wine Wednesday with a pour before curtain. It plays El Molino Avenue through November 29. Bring the friend who also moved away.
