Long Beach is the one city out here that never wanted to be Los Angeles. It sits thirty minutes down the freeway with its own skyline, its own port, its own accent, and no interest in the comparison. Cambodia Town is the largest Cambodian community outside Cambodia. Retro Row is seven blocks of records, vintage, and diner coffee that hasn't changed hands in decades. The whole place is flat enough to bike end to end, and the water is right there the entire time. A real city that happens to be walkable, which in this half of the state is close to a miracle.

A day in Long Beach

Small enough to do on a bike, deep enough to take all day. This is the order a local moves through it in, with the address for each stop.

Morning The quiet water side of the city, before it wakes.
Naples Island canals
Naples Island canals

This is about Naples. I've never even heard of it is the best reason to go — almost nobody has. Tucked into the far east end of Long Beach is a whole neighborhood of little canals, arched footbridges, and gondolas that genuinely still run: a pocket of Italy somebody dreamed up a century ago and never stopped tending. Right now, early, walk the waterways with a coffee and the whole city goes quiet and gentle around you — bridges, still water, somebody's boat knocking softly against a dock. Your people there this morning are the handful who know it's there and keep it half a secret on purpose. You just found out it exists — that's the window. Places like this slide right back out of your head by tomorrow, filed under someday, and someday never comes for a neighborhood you can't quite remember the name of. Go while it's fresh, before the city wakes up. Go.

What you're getting into
  • An hour-long Gondola Getaway cruise
  • Stroll the canal walkways past the waterfront homes
  • Rent a kayak or paddleboard on the canals
  • Second Street's shops and patios, next door
  • Mother's Beach calm water at Alamitos Bay
Afternoon A ghost ship and a mile of vinyl — Long Beach keeps its own history.
The Queen Mary
The Queen Mary

This is about the Queen Mary. You've seen her hull from the freeway a hundred times — and you have never once been on her decks. That's the whole gap. From the road she's a shape. On board she's riveted steel and art-deco ballrooms and a passenger list of ghosts the guides swear by, a ship that crossed the Atlantic a thousand times and carried men through a war, and you feel the weight of every crossing under your feet. Your people walking her decks this afternoon are the ones who finally stopped driving past and went aboard. They will never build another one of these. Not ever. She's the last of a whole world, permanently docked twenty minutes away, and you keep looking at her from the car. She's open right now. Go walk the ship instead of past it. Go.

What you're getting into
  • The Glory Days or Steam & Steel ship tour
  • A Haunted Encounters paranormal walk
  • Stay overnight in an original stateroom
  • The Aquarium of the Pacific across the water
  • Shoreline Village's waterfront shops and marina
Retro Row
Retro Row

This is about Retro Row. You could scroll a record store on your phone from the couch — and miss the entire point, which is the dig. An afternoon on Fourth Street with your hands in actual crates, flipping past a thousand albums until you turn up the one that feels like it was waiting there for you. That's not shopping — that's finding, and an algorithm has never once done it for you and never will. Your people there are the diggers: a whole mile of vintage shops and record bins and coffee in a neighborhood that never once tried to be anywhere else. The internet can sell you the record. It cannot give you the hour it took to find it, or the story of where. It's open right now, crates and all. Go put your hands in them. Go.

What you're getting into
  • 40+ vintage clothing, furniture, and record shops
  • A film or concert at the Art Theatre
  • Pastries at Gusto Bread
  • The Long Beach Museum of Art on Ocean Blvd
  • MOLAA, the Museum of Latin American Art, nearby
Golden hour Up on the bluffs for the whole bay at once.
Bluff Park
Bluff Park

This is about Bluff Park. It's just a view — until you're standing on the bluffs and it hands you the whole postcard at once: the curve of the bay, the Queen Mary lit gold across the water, the port cranes standing like patient giants as the sun drops behind them. Locals bring a blanket and say almost nothing, because on the good evenings the light does all the talking. Your people up there are the ones who came for exactly this and know to stay quiet for it. It's happening in about an hour, tonight, and every another evening you've promised yourself has quietly expired unused. This one's still on the table for about sixty more minutes. Grab a blanket off the couch on your way out the door. Go beat the sun to the bluffs. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Walk the bluff-top path above the Pacific
  • Take the staircase down to the beach and surf
  • The Lone Sailor naval memorial
  • Lunch at Claire's at the Long Beach Museum of Art
  • Bike the oceanfront shoreline path
After dark The city's real late kitchen, glowing under buzzing signs.
Cambodia Town
Cambodia Town

This is about Cambodia Town. You're about to eat at home again, using I don't really know Cambodian food as the reason — but you don't have to know it to be fed by it. That's the entire spirit of the place. Anaheim Street runs the largest Cambodian community in America, and after dark it comes fully alive: noodle houses steaming, lemongrass and grilled everything on the air, elders and teenagers eating side by side under buzzing signs. A people who survived the unthinkable and rebuilt themselves right here — and they set an extra place at the table without being asked. Your people there tonight are whoever walked in hungry and let them feed you. Home food is the smaller version of tonight. This is the bigger one, and it's a fifteen-minute drive. The signs are lit, the kitchens are going. Go take the seat they saved. Go.

What you're getting into
  • Phnom Penh Noodle Shack, a 40-year landmark
  • Cambodian-Texas brisket at Battambong BBQ
  • Food, music, and community at Sophy's
  • Khmer-owned jewelry and grocery shops
  • MacArthur Park's arts center nearby
Second Street, Belmont Shore
Second Street, Belmont Shore

This is about Second Street in Belmont Shore. You've already decided the night's over — you ate, you're in for the evening, there's no occasion. But fifteen minutes away, fourteen blocks of a real beach-town main street are wide awake: patio tables spilling onto the sidewalk, string lights and dog leashes and ice cream lines, a bar with the game on and the door propped open, couples wandering with no destination because the wandering is the destination. It's the rare corner of LA County built for walking instead of parking-and-going — you leave the car once and the whole evening unfolds on foot. Your people out there tonight are the strollers, the ones who worked out you don't need a reason or a reservation, you just need to be somewhere the sidewalk's full. Staying in is the smaller version of tonight, the one you won't remember by Tuesday. This one you walk into with your hands in your pockets and let it carry you, block by block. The patios are full right now. Go take a walk. Go.

What you're getting into
  • 14 blocks of dining, patios & shops on 2nd Street
  • The Naples Island canals & gondola rides, next door
  • Mother's Beach: calm-water swimming and kayak rentals
  • Livingston Park and the bay-front path
  • Late ice cream and dog-friendly sidewalks

Queen Mary Dark Harbor 2026
Sep 24 – Oct 31, 2026 Queen Mary, 1126 Queens Hwy, Long …

No haunt built by a theme park can borrow what this one already has: the real thing was terrifying before anyone hung a single prop. The Queen Mary is an actual 1930s ocean liner, moored in Long Beach, with engine rooms that drop seven stories below the waterline and a documented reputation as the most haunted vessel in the world. Dark Harbor just turns the lights off and lets the ship do the work. The mazes run through the ship's genuine spaces — the boiler rooms deep under the water, the historic first-class staterooms, the outdoor decks where the harbor wind does something no fog machine can. Some corridors run hundreds of feet through complete darkness, and the scale isn't designed, it's just how big the ship is. There's a scare zone in the festival tent, live entertainment, and the old first-class dining room running as an event space — but the reason to come is the hull itself, and the way real history is scarier than anything invented. 1126 Queens Hwy, Long Beach — select nights through October 2026, separate event ticket, advance purchase for the weekend nights. Bring the friend who swears they don't believe in ghosts and watch how fast the ship changes their mind.

The biggest booth on the floor is almost never where the conversation is. It is the small table in the corner, a brand on its second or third season, somebody who still has something to prove and forty minutes to explain it to you. Walking this show slowly is the entire skill. The fall edition carries different inventory than the January one. Brands come back from summer with lines that did not exist eight months ago, things that began as samples on a garage floor, collabs that read differently in August light than they ever will in a lookbook. If you work in this industry, this is where fourth-quarter decisions get made over a handshake. If you only orbit it, this is where you see what is coming before it lands anywhere else. Long Beach Convention Center on Ocean Boulevard, registration at agendashow.com. Be there the moment it opens, because the corner tables run out of attention first.

Pioneer Boulevard shuts down, and for one day the biggest Little India in Southern California becomes the biggest Diwali party west of the Mississippi. The Artesia Diwali Mela takes over seven blocks of Pioneer Boulevard — from 183rd Street to 188th Street — with a main stage of Indian music and dance performances, dozens of food vendors serving everything from chaat to biryani to fresh jalebi, cultural booths, merchants with jewelry and textiles, and a street-level energy that makes Diwali feel like exactly what it is: the festival of lights brought to life in a California parking lane. Sunday, November 10, 2026, 11 AM to 10 PM. Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia, CA. Free admission. If you know someone who grew up celebrating Diwali and hasn't been to this yet, send them this. If you didn't grow up celebrating Diwali and want to understand why a billion people do — come find out.

The beer scene here has never tried to be San Diego's, and that stubbornness is exactly the point — small, local, poured by people who will remember your name the second time. Once a year the whole thing gathers on the grounds of an adobe rancho built in 1844, which turns a beer festival into something closer to a garden party held in somebody's very old backyard. Fifteen tastings, a souvenir glass, gardens and thick white walls, and no pretense that this is a national event with local participation. It is the only festival built specifically around this city's own breweries, and it is family friendly in the genuine sense rather than the marketing sense. The LBC people who drink local on purpose will already be there when you arrive. Come taste a whole neighborhood in one afternoon, and bring whoever first taught you that beer could be interesting.

Long Beach harbor and the Queen Mary on one side, hundreds of pristine classic Datsuns and Toyotas on the other - a bone-stock survivor parked beside a fully restored showpiece, its owner standing right there ready to talk. This is the definitive Southern California gathering for JDM enthusiasts, in its 21st year, pulling collectors and fans of vintage Mazdas, Hondas, Mitsubishis, and Subarus from across the western United States. Gates open at 9 AM and the show runs until 3 PM, a full morning to walk the field, talk to owners, and photograph some of the most pristine classic Japanese iron in the country. Expect hundreds of vehicles spanning the 1950s through the early 1990s - survivors, restorations, and tastefully modified builds that honor the original engineering. Admission is free. The waterfront setting at Marina Green makes it one of the most scenic car shows in SoCal, with food vendors on-site and parking in the surrounding Long Beach waterfront lots. Joshi usually gets a cameo. Three matches into somebody else's card, a courtesy slot, and then the show moves on to whatever it actually came to do. The entire premise here is that the style deserves a house of its own on this side of the ocean. It is the fast, technical, emotionally sharp wrestling built in Japan: quick transitions, submission chains, the kind of exchange where a room goes completely silent right before it detonates. The same community that sold out Stay With Me will fill this one, and they know exactly what they are watching. Small venue in Carson. No pyro, no four-minute entrances, no filler between matches. The ring is close enough that you hear the impact, the breathing, and a corner talking somebody through the next two minutes of their life. Send it to the friend who says nobody wrestles like they used to. Put them in the second row and let them find out how wrong that is.

Somewhere along the way the big conventions stopped being about comics and started being about movie trailers. This is the one that didn't drift. Two days built around the actual thing — the pencilers and writers and colorists and letterers who came precisely because the people in this room came for the work, not the IP announcement. That focus changes the whole texture of it. The dealer room is back issues and original art and independent publishers you won't find at the mega-shows. The artist alley is close enough to reach without a strategy. The panels are about craft — how the page gets made — instead of a studio sizzle reel. If the bigger cons priced you out or wore you down, this is the one that kept faith with the reason you started reading in the first place. You can smell the sweets shops before you have found anywhere to park, and on this one morning of the year the whole street smells like that at once — mithai and frying chaat and marigolds, along a mile of Pioneer Boulevard that carries more Indian commerce than anywhere else in the Western United States. Then the procession starts. Dance troupes working classical and folk forms, school groups, community associations, floats built to represent regions that do not always agree back home and are perfectly content to share a street here. Tens of thousands come in from across Southern California for it. Afterward the shops stay open late and the parade turns into dinner — dosa, chaat, mithai, fresh juice, all of it within walking distance. Free, on Pioneer Blvd in Little India, Artesia, just off the 91. Street parking goes early. Take the friend who has been meaning to eat here for years and has been too shy to walk in alone.

A record store putting a turntable out in its own doorway is a small thing, and it is also the entire reason people drive across county lines for this. Fourth Street earned the Retro Row name honestly — vintage shops, record stores, and independent businesses stacked densely enough that the neighborhood never has to pretend to be anything. First Fridays is the night it stops pretending altogether. Galleries open. Shops stay late. Bars and restaurants push out onto the sidewalk. The crowd is exactly the mix thirty years of this has built: Long Beach lifers, vinyl collectors from the 562, and people who come down from Los Angeles because nothing up there is configured quite like this. First Friday of the month, free, late afternoon into the evening. Send it to the friend who keeps complaining that nowhere feels like anywhere anymore. Streets that carry commuters every other day of the year get taken away from cars for one weekend, and half the reason people come is to watch a working downtown turn into a racetrack. The Acura Grand Prix has run since 1975, which makes it one of the most storied street circuits in North America and the rare motorsport event a city genuinely absorbed rather than merely hosted. The circuit runs 1.968 miles along the waterfront. Practice Friday, qualifying Saturday, the IndyCar race Sunday, with permanent grandstands at Turn 1 and temporary seating scattered around the course so the view and the price scale together. Around it: support races that rotate every year, IMSA and Formula Drift among them, a vendor midway, car shows, and a harbor that spends three days smelling like fuel and sunscreen. Shoreline restaurants and bars run their own hours all weekend. Go once and the sound alone reorganizes your opinion of racing. Bring somebody who has only ever watched it on a screen.

The road you're pedaling has no cars on it, no exhaust, no honking - just the Pacific on one side and the hillside terrain of Catalina on the other, because the island's roads are closed to traffic. There is nowhere else in Southern California you can race like this. The Catalina Island Triathlon opens with an ocean swim in the clear water of Avalon Bay, moves to a bike leg through the coastal hills, and finishes with a run along Avalon's waterfront promenade. Sprint and Olympic distances suit different experience levels. Everyone travels over via Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro - the crossing and the island are part of the experience. Athletes who come the day before and stay overnight in Avalon get the full version: dinner in the casino district, a morning race, and a post-race celebration on the waterfront. Spectators can cheer from the Avalon waterfront without going anywhere near the course; the swim and run finishes are visible from the beachfront. At most conventions the person who actually drew the thing is behind a rope with a line and a forty-second window. Here they are sitting at a table with an empty chair beside them. That is the entire identity of this one-day show: writers, pencilers, inkers, colorists, letterers — working professionals available for a real conversation about the craft instead of a signature and a shove. The floor treats mainstream and alternative as equals, Marvel and DC in the same aisles as independent publishers and self-published creators who came because the audience here came specifically for comics. Artist alley carries a density of professional quality that bigger, more casual shows cannot match. You can walk right up to the person whose comic you love — at a table, no wristband lottery, no six-hour line — which at this point in convention history feels almost radical. That's the case for the smaller sibling of the San Diego behemoth an hour south: Long Beach stayed the size where the whole thing is still reachable, and reachable is the entire appeal. It's still built around comics — the publisher rows, the artist alley, the writers and artists who come because this crowd is here for the pages — and the celebrity guests do their panels and signings at tables you can actually get to. The cosplay is genuinely strong because the community takes it seriously and the room is the right size to see it properly. Two days, right on the water, the Pike a short walk when you need lunch. Halfway through the course, you run past bison. Actual American bison, on an island you can only reach by boat, standing there entirely unbothered while you try to remember what mile you are on. That is roughly the moment this stops being a trail marathon and becomes a story you will be telling for years. The route runs point to point across the interior, Two Harbors to Avalon, 26.2 miles of technical trail with serious climbing, through the bison range and the highlands and finally down into the harbor for the finish. These are trails otherwise open only to hikers. The island's ecology was shaped by thousands of years of isolation from the mainland, and running through it does not feel like anywhere on the mainland either. Registration fills fast, because California trail runners talk to each other and this is the race they talk about. Ferry passage is part of the entry. Sep 20, 2026 $35+ The Queen Mary, 1126 Queens Hwy, L…

There is a real, actual haunted ocean liner permanently docked in Long Beach, and every fall it opens its rusting belly to the public for one of the strangest Halloween experiences in California. Dark Harbor turns the Queen Mary, a ship with a genuinely grim history and a roster of resident ghosts, into a labyrinth of mazes, roaming monsters, and unsettling live performance, and if you dare, you can sit for an actual séance with the spirit-medium Lady Mabel to summon something that maybe should stay unsummoned. Select nights September 20 through November 2, 2026, aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Come for the mazes, stay for the creeping sense that not all of it is an act. Bring the friend who insists they don't get scared. This is peak weird-and-wonderful SoCal Halloween, floating on a haunted relic. Board if you dare.

LA Galaxy vs Portland Timbers at Dignity Health Sports Park
Oct 14, 2026 18400 Avalon Blvd, Carson, CA 90746

You hear them before you see them. A few hundred people from Portland, inside your building, singing continuously for ninety minutes to find out whether the home end can answer. That is the actual contest at this fixture, and it runs parallel to the one on the grass. Both of these clubs got to MLS early and helped build whatever the league turned into, and twenty years of that history means neither side has to be told what the other represents. By mid-October the table has almost finished sorting itself. The grass is worn down from summer, the evenings have cooled, and every point carries weight it did not carry in June — which is when a regular-season match starts feeling like something else entirely. Carson, under the lights, in the back half of the month. Bring the friend who claims soccer is boring. Sit them near the away end and say nothing.
