Long Beach Antique Market — August

Once a month is the whole trick. Often enough that the dealers show up reliably, rare enough that the buyers genuinely miss it in between, which is how eight hundred sellers fill twenty acres of parking lot on a Sunday morning and every one of them expects to go home lighter. They have been doing this since 1982. Mid-century furniture, vintage clothing, old signs, costume jewelry, restored radios, the whole category of object that does not exist online because it is one of one. The other half of the education is the crowd: dealers from other markets buying to resell and stylists pulling pieces for shoots, all moving fast at first light. By late morning the energy peaks. By early afternoon the haggling turns serious and prices soften. Third Sunday of the month at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach, and cash is strongly advised. Bring patience, and bring the friend with the station wagon.
