A Listening Session of Forever My Lady by Jodeci

There are records you cannot put on casually, because you already know what the first eight bars will do to you. Jodeci made one of those in 1991 - four voices out of Charlotte who sang like they were apologizing and bragging in the same breath, on an album a whole generation played in cars they did not own yet and then played again at the wedding. This is not a tribute set and not a DJ night, and nobody is going to play you the hits off it either. It is the record, in order, all the way through, deep cuts and interludes included, in a room on East 4th Street, put on with Universal's catalog division for the thirty-fifth anniversary. The part nobody warns you about a listening session is how quiet it gets - and then how fast that breaks the first time somebody in the back sings an ad-lib nobody asked them to sing. Free, first come. Dolores, doors at 6.
