May 3 brings San Diego Wave FC back to Snapdragon Stadium for an early-season NWSL home match. The Wave arrived in 2022 and immediately built something genuinely original: a San Diego club with international quality, a fan base that approaches its support with real intensity, and a Snapdragon Stadium home that provides the best visual backdrop in the NWSL. May in Mission Valley is perfect soccer weather — the morning fog gone by noon, the late afternoon clear and warm, the grass fast and true. The NWSL is the world's best women's professional league, and San Diego Wave FC represent it with a roster that consistently attracts the most talented international players to the California coast. A May match at Snapdragon is the kind of afternoon that earns its reputation among the people who show up for it.

Lucha libre wrestling and burlesque in downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 2002, Lucha VaVOOM is the show that operates in its own genre — masked wrestlers, aerial acts, Guinness record-holding hula hoopers, and burlesque performers from around the world, all in one night at the Regent Theater. Rita's version has moved here from the Mayan. Twenty-one and over. Doors at 8. Saturday night. Forty-one dollars and up. This is the show people describe to friends who have never heard of it and then drag them to immediately.

The St. Louis Cardinals arrive at Petco Park on May 7 carrying one of baseball's deepest traditions — eleven World Series titles, a fan base that treats baseball as civic identity, and a roster that competes every year regardless of the circumstances. A Cardinals series at Petco in May is the kind of early-season test that defines what a Padres year is going to look like — quality opposition, a significant away following in the stands, and a home crowd that responds by being louder and more present than usual. Petco Park in early May has one of the best views in baseball: the Coronado Bridge faint on the horizon, the bay beyond the right-field wall, the city entirely present even as the game takes over the foreground. Cardinals vs Padres is the National League East vs West rivalry in its most formal traditional clothes. Show up early.

Every second Saturday, Ventura Boulevard gets a little more interesting. The Sunshine Makers Market takes over the courtyard at The Shops at Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City with local makers, small businesses, artists, and craftspeople who make things worth seeking out. This isn't a pop-up tent of mass-produced goods — every vendor at Sunshine is selling something they made, designed, or sourced with intention. Think handmade jewelry, ceramics, botanical skincare, hand-printed textiles, illustrated prints, and things you've never seen in a box store. Admission is free. Parking is available on site. The Shops at Sportsmen's Lodge is a neighborhood landmark that's hosted everything from Sunday Farmers Markets to independent boutiques for decades. The outdoor courtyard setting gives the market an easy, unhurried feel — drop in with a coffee, spend an hour, leave with something you'll actually use. Sunshine Makers Market has hosted over 87 events across two years, building one of the more consistent indie vendor communities in the San Fernando Valley. If you're a maker interested in applying for a booth, vendor applications are typically open on their Eventbrite page a few weeks before each event. Free admission. All ages. Dog-friendly — check their Instagram (@sunshinemakersmarket) for confirmed dog policy per venue.

UFC 328 lands on May 9 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey — and the main event between Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland is the kind of fight that makes the middleweight division look genuinely dangerous for everyone. Chimaev arrives as one of the most physically dominant fighters to enter MMA in a generation: unbeaten, relentless, and capable of both wrestling and striking at championship level. Strickland won the middleweight belt in a performance no one saw coming and defended it with a personality that makes him one of the sport's most compelling characters regardless of whether you like him. Two fighters with nothing to lose, neither willing to play it safe, in a 185-pound main event that the serious MMA community has been circling on the calendar for months. If you can't be in Newark on May 9, the PPV is the next best thing — but the best option is to be inside Prudential Center for live UFC at its most volatile.

BMO Stadium in South Los Angeles opens its 2026 summer stretch on May 10 when LAFC host the Houston Dynamo — a Western Conference match with genuine playoff implications from this early in the campaign. LAFC's BMO Stadium is one of the best soccer-specific venues in North America: the bowl is tight, the sightlines are exceptional, and the 3252 supporter section in the north end creates an atmosphere that ranks with anything in MLS. Houston Dynamo are a competitive Western Conference club that tests every home side through the press and transition phases of the game — the kind of opponent that forces LAFC to be at their organized best. May in Los Angeles means perfect football weather, and a Saturday evening at BMO under the lights with the downtown skyline visible beyond the south stand is the kind of sports evening that justifies driving in from wherever you are. LAFC have been a Western Conference title contender since their founding. On May 10, that ambition begins again in earnest.
