The specific joy of a small con is inventory - a dealer who has the exact 1980s action figure you've been chasing for a decade, with enough floor space that you can actually find it. Geekin Out is built for that: focused enough to draw serious collectors with deep inventory, accessible enough for a casual fan who just wants to browse.

Organized by Toy Depot, this one-day toy and pop culture convention takes over the Holiday Inn La Mirada on August 8, 2026. The floor features vendors specializing in everything from original 1980s action figures and vintage board games to modern collectible figures and custom fan art, with a Creator Alley giving independent artists and craftspeople dedicated space to sell original work directly to attendees. It's family-friendly, with free parking in the hotel lot.

The La Mirada location makes it a convenient option for collectors coming from the South Bay, Orange County, and the San Gabriel Valley. Doors open at 9am and the convention runs until 6pm. Advance ticket pricing is available through Eventbrite.

Beneath a canopy of stars in the heart of Balboa Park, the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world wakes up every Monday night and fills the canyon with a sound that has no business being free. The International Summer Organ Festival returns to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion for another season of Monday evening concerts at 7:30 PM through the summer of 2026. World-class organists perform solo recitals on the 5,017-pipe Austin organ -- an instrument built in 1914 that remains one of San Diego's most extraordinary cultural treasures. Special evenings include silent film screenings with live organ accompaniment, where a century-old art form comes alive in real time. If you have never experienced a pipe organ at full power in an open-air pavilion, nothing prepares you for the physical sensation -- the low registers vibrate through the ground beneath your chair while the upper voices float into the eucalyptus canopy overhead. This is classical music stripped of every barrier: no dress code, no ticket price, no pretension. Bring a sweater and a low chair. The pavilion seats fill by 7 PM on popular nights. The surrounding lawn offers excellent acoustics -- the organ was designed to project into the canyon. The Prado restaurant is a five-minute walk for pre-concert dinner. The Spreckels Organ is one of a handful of outdoor instruments in the world that still performs weekly. San Diego has had this for over a century. Most of San Diego does not know.

Spirited Away gave you that homesickness the first time you saw it — and this October, for one week only, its 25th anniversary and the finale of Studio Ghibli Fest 2026, Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece comes back to the big screen where the ache belongs. There is a particular silence that falls over a theater full of people who love the same film. The lights drop, Joe Hisaishi's first piano notes land, and a room of strangers stops breathing at the same moment. Ghibli Fest runs both the subtitled original and the English dub, with a piece of surprise content before each show. But the real event is the crowd — parents who were kids when this came out, now holding the hands of kids seeing it for the first time; longtime fans catching a detail they'd missed on every laptop rewatch; someone two rows back crying quietly and not caring who sees. Even if you've seen it a dozen times, you have not seen it like this. If Spirited Away is a film you carry around inside you, this isn't a question — you go. Projected, at scale, with sound that fills the room, is the version it was made for. That is what walking into the PONYO exhibition at the Academy Museum feels like, except you are an adult and you still cannot explain why Miyazaki makes you cry. More than 100 rare materials hand-picked by Studio Ghibli fill the gallery -- original hand drawings by Hayao Miyazaki himself, art boards that show the painstaking frame-by-frame process behind every wave that rolled across the screen, and posters from the original Japanese release. Some of these pieces have never been displayed in North America. There is an interactive animation table where visitors can create their own stop-motion sequences using sea creature cut-outs. The immersive play environment recreates the oceanic world of the film. Accompanying the exhibition through August 28 is The World of Studio Ghibli screening series. The exhibition runs through January 10, 2027. General admission is $25 for adults, $19 for seniors, $15 for students, and free for visitors 17 and under. Ten days in August, and the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota — population 7,000 — becomes a city of half a million. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has been doing this since 1938. Arrive in Sturgis on the first Friday of the rally and the sound alone tells you something is different. Main Street closes to cars and opens to motorcycles, and the flow of custom Harleys, touring bikes, and custom builds becomes a continuous parade. The surrounding Black Hills are the real draw for serious riders: Needles Highway is 14 miles of narrow tunnels and granite spire switchbacks that belong on every motorcyclist's bucket list. Iron Mountain Road corkscrews through South Dakota's most dramatic terrain. The rally itself spawns music stages, vendor villages, stunt shows, bike shows, and pop-up bars across a 50-mile radius — the Buffalo Chip alone hosts major touring acts nightly. The diversity of the crowd surprises first-timers: veterans and newcomers, engineers and mechanics, people who rode three states to get here and people who flew in and rented a bike. The common denominator is the machine. Sturgis is for anyone who rides or wants to understand what riding means to the people who live it.
