About

La Jolla's SummerFest turns 40 this summer, and the La Jolla Music Society is marking the occasion with four weeks of chamber music, jazz, world premieres, and free community programming at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center — one of the genuinely beautiful performance spaces built in the last decade anywhere in the American West.

SummerFest 2026 runs July 31 through August 29. The main concert series features more than 20 performances including Brad Mehldau's Ride Into the Sun — a reimagining of Elliott Smith songs with Chris Thile and Blake Mills that does not fit into any existing genre and is selling fast. Imani Winds performs Wayne Shorter's Terra Incognita during the second week. One marquee night moves to the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego for a program built around the American musical tradition.

The Conrad is at 7600 Fay Ave in the heart of La Jolla Village, a 10-minute walk from the water. Parking is available in the adjacent structure; street parking is possible but fills early on weekend nights. The venue seats roughly 500 in the main hall and is intimate enough that the third row and the twentieth row feel equally close to the stage.

The free programming is serious: open rehearsals, artist conversations, master classes, and youth performances run throughout all four weeks. If you want to understand what SummerFest actually is — a working music residency where internationally recognized artists collaborate and perform — the free open rehearsals are where you see it clearly.

Tickets for individual concerts went on sale May 4. The festival has sold out multiple nights in prior years. This is the 40th. Book early.

Somewhere between the first listen and standing in a concert hall, K-pop fans build a different kind of belonging. In boba shops and cafes, over lightsticks and cupsleeve giveaways, with the people who understand exactly why you care this much. The Angels in August IVE Cupsleeve at Cafe Terrasse is a fan-organized meetup timed to IVE's SHOW WHAT I AM LA show at Kia Forum on August 2. It is the pre-show ritual — the hours before the main event when the community recognizes itself. Fans arrive to collect limited cupsleeves designed by the organizer community, meet other IVE fans from across SoCal, and walk into the Kia Forum already knowing the people standing around them. Cafe Terrasse has hosted multiple K-pop fan community events in Los Angeles. The atmosphere is warm, crowded with merch, and unmistakably for people who already know each other even when they are meeting for the first time. Limited cupsleeve giveaways, photo corners, and fan-made goods from the SoCal IVE fan community. ArtWalk Liberty Station returns to the Liberty Station Arts District for three days, July 31 through August 2, 2026, now in its 19th year, gathering over 175 artists from across the United States and Mexico in one of San Diego's most architecturally striking outdoor settings. The festival spans the historic Naval Training Center grounds in Point Loma, with paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass art, mixed media, and handcrafted jewelry. Very Be Careful, the Los Angeles-based Colombian vallenato group that has been carrying the accordion-centered sound of Colombia's Caribbean coast to Southern California since the early 2000s, plays the Hammer courtyard in Westwood. They have filled venues twice this size; here it will be intimate. Vallenato is not salsa, and not cumbia as most Americans know it - it is older, more accordion-centered, rooted in the Colombian Caribbean coast, and this band is one of the best introductions to it anywhere in LA. The San Diego Soul Food Fest is what happens when a whole neighborhood brings those recipes out of the kitchen and onto the street. On August 1st, North Park fills with vendors from across the Black culinary diaspora -- not just the American South, but the full spectrum of traditions that traveled, adapted, and survived. Jerk chicken from a family that brought the recipe from Kingston. Gumbo from a vendor whose grandmother's grandmother cooked it by feel. Mac and cheese that does not need a competition because it already won the one that matters: the one at home. General admission gets you through the door to browse vendors, catch live entertainment, and hear an author interview. Tasting tickets add three samples from any vendor you choose -- enough to start an argument about whose was best. The fest runs from 11 AM to 4 PM, compact enough to feel like a block party, not a production. What makes this different from a food truck rally: the people who show up already know each other. This is a community that cooks for community, and the fest is the one day a year the whole neighborhood eats together in public.
