About

Every person in attendance looks like they have been waiting their whole life to wear this exact outfit. That is the first thing you notice. AFROPUNK Brooklyn 2026 is a two-day celebration at Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn — Jazmine Sullivan, Flying Lotus, Joey Bada$$, Vince Staples, Baby Tate, and 70,000 artists, activists, and culture makers who refuse to be categorized. Founded in 2005 as a response to the whitewashing of punk and rock spaces, AFROPUNK has evolved into the definitive gathering of Black culture in its most expansive and unapologetic form.

The moment you step in, you understand that AFROPUNK is not a music festival in the conventional sense. It is a fashion show, a protest, a family reunion, and a concert all happening simultaneously across a Brooklyn park. The stages host acts spanning neo-soul, hip-hop, punk, afrobeats, and electronic music. The Spinthrift Market features independent Black vendors. Bites n Beats serves some of New York's top street food. Activism Row dedicates an entire section to live muralists and community organizing.

If you are someone who has ever felt like you exist at the intersection of too many things to be claimed by any one scene, AFROPUNK was built for you. This is not for people who want a clean corporate festival experience. It is for people who want to feel seen in a crowd of 70,000.

The 2026 edition is at Prospect Park Bandshell (Lena Horne Bandshell) — confirm transit before you arrive, as this location requires planning. Arrive by noon: crowds become immovable between the two main stages by 3pm. Bring a reusable water bottle — free water stations throughout the grounds. Clear bags only. SeeTickets is the only official ticket vendor. August 15 and 16, 2026, Brooklyn, NY.

AFROPUNK is the cultural event that hip-hop, punk, jazz, fashion, and activism all claim as their own. Twenty years in, nothing else is quite like it.

Coronado Promenade Summer Concerts 2026 — Free Sundays at Spreckels Park
Tomorrow · Aug 3 Spreckels Park, 601 Orange Ave, Co…

Coronado doesn't rush anything. The bridge slows you down on the way in. The beach holds you still. And on Sunday evenings, Spreckels Park fills with people who understand that the best thing to do with a summer night is nothing at all. The Coronado Promenade Summer Concerts have been running for decades because the formula is perfect: one band, one park, one sunset, no cover. Bring a picnic. Spread a blanket. The kids run laps around the gazebo while the adults lean back into their chairs and let the music do the work. Tribute bands, swing ensembles, Americana acts, classic rock — the lineup rotates but the vibe never changes. The August 23 show is a double-header celebrating America's and the U.S. Navy's 250th birthday with Nashville's SixWire and special guest performers. Seventeen shows across fifteen Sundays, all free, all at Spreckels Park. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. No tickets needed, no reservation required. Every Sunday at 6:00 PM. 601 Orange Avenue, Coronado.

Coronado Promenade Concerts in the Park 2026
Every Monday · Next Aug 3 Free Spreckels Park, 601 Orange Ave, Co…

The blanket is the same one from last summer. The spot is the same patch of grass your neighbor saved with two lawn chairs and a cooler at 4 PM. The band is different but the feeling is not — you sit down, the sun drops behind the Hotel Del, and for ninety minutes nothing in the world requires your password. Coronado Promenade Concerts has run free Sunday concerts at Spreckels Park every summer for decades, and the 2026 season stretches seventeen shows across fifteen Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Two of those Sundays are double-headers — May 24 and August 23, the latter celebrating America's and the U.S. Navy's 250th birthday with SixWire, the Nashville band that has played every military branch's birthday for years. Big Time Operator, a five-time San Diego Music Award winner for Best Big Band, brings sixteen musicians on stage for the June 28 show. The Suenamis — Coronado's own high-energy dance band — close out the season on September 6. Bring a low chair and something cold. Dogs on leashes welcome. No tickets, no reservations, no catch. Spreckels Park, 601 Orange Ave, Coronado, CA 92118. Sundays at 6 PM, May 24 through September 6, 2026. Free.

Lestat's Monday Night Open Mic
Every Monday · Next Aug 3 Lestat's Coffee House, 3343 Adams …

Lestat's Coffee House on Adams Avenue runs a music open mic every Monday evening — sign-ups at 5:30 PM, show from 6 to 8 PM, no cover charge, all genres welcome. It is one of the longest-running open mics in San Diego and the most accessible entry point for anyone who wants to perform in front of a real audience for the first time. The Monday open mic at Lestat's draws a mix of regulars who have been coming for years and first-timers who found the listing and decided to try. The audience is respectful, the room is a coffee house (which means quieter and more attentive than a bar), and the format gives every performer a fair shot. Singer-songwriters, acoustic bands, solo instrumentalists, the occasional comedian or spoken word performer — the diversity of what shows up on any given Monday is one of its virtues. Lestat's Coffee House, 3343 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA 92116. Normal Heights neighborhood. Every Monday, sign-ups 5:30 PM, show 6-8 PM. Free admission. Coffee, tea, and light food available throughout. Street parking on Adams Ave and surrounding Normal Heights streets. The 11 bus runs along Adams Ave. The open mic is an institution in the Normal Heights music community — the people who run it have been doing this for a long time.

Spreckels International Summer Organ Festival 2026 — Monday Evenings
Every Monday · Next Aug 3 Free Spreckels Organ Pavilion, 2211 Pan…

The best organists in the world do not, as a rule, pass through San Diego on a Monday night — unless somebody makes a point of bringing them. Every summer for decades, the International Summer Organ Festival has answered that belief by bringing virtuosos from across the United States and abroad to perform Monday evening concerts at the Pavilion. The Monday series is distinct from the Sunday afternoon concerts. It runs longer, draws a more focused audience, and features soloists who have built careers around the instrument. The programs change weekly — each visiting organist chooses their own — which means returning more than once gives you a genuinely different experience. An instrument this complex and this rare rewards an audience willing to sit with it more than once. The outdoor setting in Balboa Park at dusk is a venue unto itself. The marine layer has usually burned off by evening, and the amphitheater-style seating faces the organ facade while the park goes quiet behind you. Bring something to sit on and stay for the full program. The Organ Pavilion is one of the better concert venues in San Diego in summer, free, and most people who live here have never been. Free. No tickets. Monday evenings 7:30–9 PM, July through early September. Spreckels Organ Pavilion, 2211 Pan American Rd E, Balboa Park, San Diego.

Pacific Beach Night Market
Monthly · Next Aug 4 Free Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …

Every Thursday evening, Pacific Beach comes alive at the corner of Bayard Street and Garnet Avenue. The PB Night Market runs from 5 to 9:30 PM, just 150 steps from the Pacific Ocean, and brings together 9 to 12 rotating food vendors, fire pits, games, and live music in one of San Diego most walkable beach neighborhoods. This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. You show up, grab something to eat from one of the food trucks or pop-up vendors, and settle into the fire pit area for the kind of spontaneous Thursday evening that does not need a plan. The music is live and local -- acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. The crowd is a mix of Pacific Beach locals, students, and anyone who wandered over from the beach. Vendors rotate weekly. Past offerings have included birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, and local small-batch hot sauces. A few artisan and craft vendors typically set up alongside the food. Free to attend. No tickets, no RSVPs. Just walk up. Dress for the beach breeze -- it cools off after sunset even in summer.

Java Joe's Open Mic — Bi-Weekly Tuesdays
Every other Tuesday · Next Aug 4 Java Joe's Coffee House, San Diego…

Java Joe's Open Mic runs every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9:30 PM — one of San Diego's most active weekly music open mics, hosted by Gaby Aparicio, covering all genres from singer-songwriters to acoustic bands to experimental solo performers. Open mics at Java Joe's operate on the community model: you show up, you sign up, you get your time. The host keeps the order honest and the atmosphere welcoming. The crowd is a mix of performers waiting for their slot and genuine listeners who come because the format produces surprises — you never know who is going to get up and do something remarkable on any given Tuesday night. The venue is a coffee house, which means the room listens rather than talks over the performers. That acoustic reality shapes the open mic: quieter instruments are viable, dynamics are audible, and the audience is closer to the performance than in a bar. If you have never performed in public and are looking for the least intimidating entry point in San Diego, this is a strong candidate. Java Joe's, San Diego, CA. Every Tuesday, 6:30-9:30 PM. Free admission. Check Facebook (facebook.com/javajoesopenmic) for address confirmation and any scheduling updates — the venue has had multiple locations over the years. Arrive by 6 PM to sign up for your slot before the list fills.

Death Cab for Cutie: I Built You A Tower World Tour -- Petco Park, San Diego
In 2 days · Aug 4 Petco Park, 100 Park Blvd, San Die…

Twenty years of writing songs about the slow dissolve of everything beautiful, and somehow the beauty keeps winning. Death Cab for Cutie brings the I Built You A Tower World Tour to Gallagher Square at Petco Park on August 4, with Nation of Language opening, and the evening will sound exactly like what happens when indie rock grows up and refuses to stop meaning something. Ben Gibbard has spent two decades turning heartbreak into architecture, songs with rooms you can walk through, staircases that lead to a view you were not ready for. The live show at Gallagher Square's intimate six-thousand-capacity outdoor stage brings those rooms to life in a way that a headphone cannot. There is a difference between hearing Transatlanticism alone in your car and hearing it with six thousand people who all drove to the same parking lot for the same reason. Nation of Language opens the evening with their own brand of synth-driven post-punk that pairs perfectly: cold surfaces, warm hearts, the whole contradiction. Gallagher Square at Petco Park is one of San Diego's best outdoor concert venues: small enough to feel personal, open enough to let the bay breeze in. Show starts at 7:00 PM. Tickets start around seventy-two dollars through Ticketmaster. Petco Park, 100 Park Blvd, San Diego. August 4, 2026. For everyone who ever played Plans on repeat and never told anyone why.

In-Unit Laundry — Stand-Up Tuesdays
Every Tuesday · Next Aug 4 $10-$15 Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe, 210…

The best comedy rooms are the ones where the hosts know each other's bits well enough to wreck them mid-set, and you're close enough to watch it happen. That's the whole idea behind In-Unit Laundry, the Tuesday stand-up night MK Paulsen and Simon Gibson run at the Lyric Hyperion in Silver Lake -- the small theater next to the cafe, about a hundred seats, a stage low enough that eye contact is unavoidable. The bill rotates: touring headliners passing through, LA circuit regulars working out new material, the occasional unannounced drop-in. The crowd is the alt-comedy crowd, which is to say people who follow specific hosts and specific podcasts and already know who's going up before the lineup posts. Bring the friend whose sense of humor is slightly too specific for the big clubs. Doors are early so you can grab a coffee or a drink from the cafe side first. Tuesdays at eight. Tickets are cheap because the room is small, and the cafe stays open after the show.

You drop your name in a bucket, and fate decides whether you read tonight — in front of two hundred strangers who showed up on a Tuesday to hear exactly that. That's the deal at the longest-running spoken-word open mic in Los Angeles. Dante Basco started it in his living room in 1998 with Ron 'Shihan' Van Clief, Devan 'Poetri' Smith, and 'Brutha' Gimmel Hooper, and Da Poetry Lounge has run every Tuesday since, now at Greenway Court Theatre on Fairfax. This is the room that produced half of LA's spoken-word generation — Saul Williams, Beau Sia, Jamie DeWolf, in their different decades. The third Tuesday of every month is the slam: same room, real stakes. The rest of the time it's open — you sign up, you wait to hear your name, and whether you kill or freeze, the room holds you either way. Doors at eight, bucket at eight-thirty, mic at nine. Five dollars for open mic, ten for slam, cash only, all ages. Some of tonight's names have already been called. Some of them haven't.

Ventura County Fair 2026
In 3 days · Aug 5 – Aug 16 10 W Harbor Blvd, Ventura, CA 93001

Most county fairs make you choose between the funnel cake and the view. This one sits right on the sand — the fairgrounds run along the waterfront in Ventura, so the Ferris wheel turns against the Pacific and the whole place smells like fried dough and ocean at once. It's been marking the end of Central Coast summer for over a century, and it still does it the honest way. Eleven days of the full pageantry: carnival rides and livestock barns, 4-H kids standing nervous next to their projects, pie contests, deep-fried everything, and an evening concert series on multiple stages pulling regional and national acts. The demolition derby and the rodeo round out the calendar. The food leans genuinely local — look for the avocado dishes from the Central Coast growers who are basically neighbors of the fairgrounds — and the Pacific sunset does a thing to the midway lights no inland fair can borrow. Ventura County Fairgrounds, on Harbor Boulevard in Ventura — eleven days, free parking on-site. Check venturacountyfair.org for the daily schedule and concert lineup. Come at dusk so you catch the sun going down behind the rides.

If a skull-shaped mug and a rum drink named after a deity have ever exerted a genuine pull on you, there is a five-day gathering in Mission Valley where several thousand people feel exactly the same way. Tiki Oasis is the world's largest tiki culture convention and one of the most coherent subcultures in American pop culture - a shared aesthetic vocabulary, a love of craftsmanship, and a real reverence for the mid-century obsession with tropical fantasy. Since 2001, it has drawn collectors, artists, musicians, bartenders, and fashion enthusiasts to the Town and Country Resort, all in full tiki regalia: vintage Hawaiian shirts, muumuus, leis, elaborate cosplay. Each year turns on a theme that shapes the art, entertainment, vendors, and fashion. Expect live exotica and tiki-adjacent performances, rum and cocktail seminars led by some of the country's top bartenders, an extensive marketplace of handmade ceramics and collectibles, and exhibitions from the best tiki artists working. Made in America Festival 2026 — Philadelphia, PA
Sep 5 – Sep 6, 2026 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philade…

Jay-Z shuts down a boulevard between City Hall and the Art Museum every Labor Day weekend. That choice is the whole argument. The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is not a parking lot or a fairground. It's a European-style civic boulevard lined with museums and cultural institutions — the kind of street that announces a city taking itself seriously. For two days every September, it becomes Made in America's main stage, and Philadelphia's skyline sits behind the headliners like the city dressed for the occasion. The Rocky steps are to your left. That is not incidental. The iconography is intentional: Jay-Z's claim on this specific piece of civic geography is what the festival is about before a single note is played — hip-hop culture, in the middle of the institutions, where it belongs. The festival is curated, not assembled. The lineup reflects Jay-Z's range as a cultural reader: hip-hop and R&B at the center, reaching into pop, alternative, and electronic at the exact intersections where the genres actually meet. You'll feel the difference. September 5–6, 2026 | Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA Philadelphia in early September runs warm — upper 70s, outdoor all day. Sunscreen and real shoes, not sandals. The Parkway is long and you will cover it. Plan on arriving at dusk for the headliners — that's when the city skyline fully activates behind the stage and the crowd finds its density. Daytime sets are worth catching, but dusk is when the setting becomes undeniable. If you can only be there for a few hours, be there at sunset. General admission puts you in the mix. Single-day and two-day passes both available; the full two days is the full argument. Downtown Philadelphia hotels are walking distance from the venue. SEPTA subway and bus connect from throughout the metro — the parking situation near the Parkway on Labor Day weekend is not something you want to discover on the day. The festival is family-appropriate for most of the day and intensifies as the headliners close each night. The crowd skews intentional — people who came because they know what Jay-Z thinks matters, and want to see his current read on it. That specificity shows in how the crowd moves and what it responds to. The Parkway, the Art Museum, City Hall — the setting makes the declaration fresh every year. The lineup is Jay-Z's current read on where American music is and where it's going. Both are worth the trip. This is what cultural authority looks like when it's been earned. Tickets on Ticketmaster. Historically sells out before the full lineup is announced — buy when you see it.
