What it was like

They believed Little Italy's European character deserved something that matched it — not a once-a-month event but a fixture, a permanent Saturday institution that transformed six city blocks into the kind of market scene you'd find in any European neighborhood worth visiting.

The Little Italy Mercato runs every Saturday from 8 AM to 2 PM along West Date Street, from Kettner Boulevard to Front Street. San Diego County's largest certified farmers market. Forty-plus years of Saturdays. What that means in practice: 150+ vendors across produce, artisan foods, flowers, crafts, and prepared food.

The Mercato is also where San Diego's restaurant scene shops for the week. On a busy Saturday morning, you'll stand next to a chef from a downtown restaurant debating tomato varieties with a farmer from Fallbrook. That proximity is the market's character.

A smaller Wednesday Mercato runs the same blocks at 9:30 AM–1:30 PM — more neighborhood, fewer tourists, still worth it.

The LA Roadster Show returns to the Fairplex at Pomona on June 19–20, 2026 — one of the longest-running traditional hot rod and custom car shows in Southern California. Now in its sixth decade, the LA Roadster Show is dedicated exclusively to roadsters: open-body traditional hot rods in the style of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s that define American car culture at its most essential form. Unlike general car shows that mix eras and styles, the Roadster Show maintains a strict definition: all vehicles must be roadsters in the traditional sense. This creates a visually cohesive event that feels more like a living museum of American automotive art than a typical car show. The quality of the builds is exceptional — many vehicles have been in families for decades or represent lifetime builds by their owners. The Swap Meet component runs alongside the show, filling additional lots with parts, memorabilia, tools, and vintage automotive goods for builders and collectors. Gates open at 9 AM both days. The Fairplex at Pomona offers excellent accessibility via Interstate 10 and ample parking across the fairgrounds. Admission available at the gate. More than 175 vendors means the market is actually a lot of different markets at once: the produce section near the entrance, the flower stalls in the middle, the cheese and jam vendors toward the back, and the prepared food corridor where you make decisions you didn't know you had to make. Smorgasburg Los Angeles has been proving that argument every Sunday at ROW DTLA, on the blocks south of the Arts District. The format is pure: dozens of food vendors under a canopy of tents in an open-air space designed for movement. You circle the whole market before you commit. You sample things you wouldn't order from a menu because the plate is right there and the vendor is watching you try it. The lineup rotates over time — vendors come and go based on who survived the previous week and who wants another shot — but the quality competition between stalls is constant. The roster includes vendors building followings that will eventually become restaurants. A Sunday at Smorgasburg is what the first month of a restaurant's existence looks like, compressed into one block and fifty simultaneous experiments. Free admission. The venue's design — the white band shell, the terraced seating that gives every section a distinct character — makes the Bowl an architectural experience as much as a performance venue. Opening Night typically features the LA Philharmonic under its music director with special guest artists or programming designed to celebrate the season's thematic focus. The Box and Terrace sections include catered dining service; the Boxes and covered sections allow picnic arrangements with food and wine brought from home or purchased from the Bowl's restaurants. Bowl shuttle service from the Park & Ride lots at Lake Avenue, the Hollywood/Highland Metro station, and other satellite locations is the recommended transportation — the Bowl's parking lots fill early and the shuttle significantly reduces the experience friction. Opening Night tickets are premium-priced and should be purchased through the LA Phil website as soon as the season schedule is announced.
