About

They believed La Jolla's gallery corridor should come alive all at once — once a month, on a Friday evening when the light from the Pacific makes everything on the walls look better than it is.

The La Jolla First Friday Art Walk happens on the first Friday of every month from 4 to 7 PM across the galleries and studios of downtown La Jolla. The format is self-guided — you pick the route, set the pace, and let what you're looking at determine how long you stay. Galleries serve wine and light snacks. The Thumbprint Gallery on Kline Street is the unofficial anchor of the walk.

More than 400 people attend each month, which is enough to create the feeling of a neighborhood turning out for itself. The monthly theme changes — sometimes ocean-focused, sometimes seasonal — but the character of the walk is consistent: a relaxed, self-directed evening that ends whenever you decide it does.

Free admission. Evening parking is available on most La Jolla streets. The walk is short enough to complete in an hour, long enough to fill an evening.

Monthly — first Friday, 4–7 PM. Thumbprint Gallery, 920 Kline St, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Concerts by the Sea — Free Summer Concert Series at La Jolla Cove
Jul 12, 2026 1100 Coast Blvd, La Jolla, CA 92037

Since 1984, the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla has been throwing free Sunday afternoon concerts at Scripps Park on the cliffs above La Jolla Cove. Forty years of this, every summer. The Pacific behind the stage. The grass in front of it. No seats to reserve, no ticket required. The 2026 series runs four Sundays: July 12, July 19, July 26, and August 2, from 3:30 to 5:30pm. Each show features live music — jazz, big band, Latin, folk — rotating styles week to week. The crowd brings blankets and beach chairs. Dogs are welcome. Children run. Grandparents sit and sway. There is nothing pretentious about this. It is not curated. It is a neighborhood deciding, year after year, that Sunday afternoons in summer should sound like something. Scripps Park is a short walk from the main La Jolla village. Arrive early on warm Sundays — the grass fills quickly. Parking in the surrounding streets or the pay lots on Prospect Street. Free admission. No registration. Just show up.

Grunion Runs 2026 — La Jolla Shores, San Diego
Jul 23 – Jul 24, 2026 ✨ New Free 2200 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla…

Every summer, on the nights following a full or new moon, Pacific grunion ride the waves onto San Diego beaches to spawn. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announces the dates months in advance. It sounds like a fact from a science textbook. Then you are standing on a dark beach at 10pm while hundreds of small silver fish wash up at your feet, and the dozen strangers around you all have the same expression. The permitted season runs from June through August. La Jolla Shores is the most accessible location — clean sand, good visibility, easy parking by beach standards. The crowd is mixed: families with children in headlamps, marine biology students with clipboards, people who heard about grunion decades ago and finally made the drive. During permitted months, you can pick up the fish by hand — no nets, no equipment, no fishing license required. The grunion stay on the beach for about two to three minutes per wave cycle. Then they're gone. 2200 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla, CA 92037. Free. Check cdfw.ca.gov for the 2026 permitted run schedule. Summer evenings, after dark.

La Jolla Music Society SummerFest 2026 — 40th Anniversary
Jul 31 – Aug 29, 2026 $40-$150 Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Cent…

La Jolla's SummerFest turns 40 this summer, and the La Jolla Music Society is marking the occasion with four weeks of chamber music, jazz, world premieres, and free community programming at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center — one of the genuinely beautiful performance spaces built in the last decade anywhere in the American West. SummerFest 2026 runs July 31 through August 29. The main concert series features more than 20 performances including Brad Mehldau's Ride Into the Sun — a reimagining of Elliott Smith songs with Chris Thile and Blake Mills that does not fit into any existing genre and is selling fast. Imani Winds performs Wayne Shorter's Terra Incognita during the second week. One marquee night moves to the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego for a program built around the American musical tradition. The Conrad is at 7600 Fay Ave in the heart of La Jolla Village, a 10-minute walk from the water. Parking is available in the adjacent structure; street parking is possible but fills early on weekend nights. The venue seats roughly 500 in the main hall and is intimate enough that the third row and the twentieth row feel equally close to the stage. The free programming is serious: open rehearsals, artist conversations, master classes, and youth performances run throughout all four weeks. If you want to understand what SummerFest actually is — a working music residency where internationally recognized artists collaborate and perform — the free open rehearsals are where you see it clearly. Tickets for individual concerts went on sale May 4. The festival has sold out multiple nights in prior years. This is the 40th. Book early.

La Jolla Art & Wine Festival 2026
Oct 10, 2026 Girard Ave & Prospect St, La Jolla…

The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival returns to the streets of downtown La Jolla for its annual two-day outdoor event in October. More than 170 juried artists exhibit across painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, glass, woodworking, photography, and mixed media — one of the more seriously curated outdoor art events in Southern California. The wine and craft beer component makes this a genuine community gathering rather than a gallery visit: you browse with a glass in hand, discover work you were not expecting, and have real conversations with the artists. La Jolla Village in October has ideal weather — cool mornings, warm afternoons, the kind of light that makes outdoor art events look their best. Girard Avenue and Prospect Street, downtown La Jolla, San Diego, CA 92037. Saturday October 10 and Sunday October 11. General admission includes a wine glass and tasting tickets. Additional tasting tickets available inside. Parking throughout La Jolla Village — the event closes several blocks to traffic, so arrive early or walk from peripheral lots. The event benefits the La Jolla Village Merchants Association and local arts programs.
