About

The La Jolla Rough Water Swim has been running continuously since 1916 — making it the oldest open water swimming event in the United States. September 13 at La Jolla Cove. From the 1-mile Gatorman to the 3-mile championship course, the cove is wall-to-wall swimmers and spectators from dawn. Even as a spectator, watching a thousand swimmers enter the Pacific at once is something you don't forget. Registration at ljroughwater.com.

Orange County Water Lantern Festival 2026
Aug 1 – Aug 2, 2026 From 0.99 Centennial Park, 3000 W Edinger Av…

As the sun sets over Centennial Park in Santa Ana, thousands of paper lanterns hit the water — and for one hour, Orange County becomes something else entirely. The Orange County Water Lantern Festival returns August 1–2, 2026, with two evenings of music, food trucks, and the kind of communal ritual that people travel hours to be part of. Lanterns open at 5:00 PM each day, with the main lantern launch happening between 8:00 and 9:00 PM as darkness falls over the park pond. Every attendee receives a lantern kit at check-in: you'll decorate your lantern with the included markers — write a wish, a name, a message — then set it gently on the water with hundreds of strangers doing the same thing at the same time. The effect is genuinely arresting: a slow-moving carpet of warm light spreading across the dark water while live acoustic music plays from the stage nearby. The event takes place at Centennial Park's pond area, well-served by OC bus routes and with free parking available in the adjacent lot. Food trucks are on-site serving dinner, and lawn seating is BYO-blanket. Tickets start at 0.99 early bird (rising to 7.99 at the gate) and include the lantern kit — children 3 and under are free. This is not a passive spectacle: you are part of what you're watching. That's the mechanic that makes it stick. Purchase through the Water Lantern Festival's official site.

Chicago Air and Water Show 2026 — Chicago, IL
Aug 15 – Aug 16, 2026 1600 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL …

Jets fly between the buildings and out over Lake Michigan. The Chicago Air and Water Show does this every August along the lakeshore — free — and two million people show up. The experience occupies the entire lakefront from approximately Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street Beach. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels typically headline, performing synchronized formation flying at over 700 miles per hour with wing separations measured in feet. The U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, Air Force Thunderbirds, and civilian aerobatic performers fill out a program that runs from roughly 9am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The sound alone — a physical, chest-deep roar from aircraft passing at low altitude — is something that cannot be replicated by video. Worth it? Who it's for: If you have never seen military precision aerobatics in person, this is the event to do it — and it is free. No tickets. No registration. Just show up to the lakefront. The crowds are massive, particularly on Sunday, but the lakefront is wide enough that even with two million people over the weekend, you can find a workable vantage point. The show is appropriate for all ages; the sensory experience is especially memorable for children. What to know before you go: North Avenue Beach (the primary viewing area) gets extremely crowded by 8am on both days. Arriving early by 7:30am gives you the best beach positioning. CTA buses and the Red/Brown/Purple lines to Chicago or Fullerton stations are the most practical way to get there — driving and parking in Lincoln Park on show weekend is brutal. Bring sunscreen, a portable chair or blanket, water, and ear protection if you are sensitive to loud noise. The Navy Blue Angels typically perform Sunday afternoon at peak intensity. Weather delays happen occasionally — check the official schedule the morning of. The Chicago Air and Water Show is the event where the Chicago summer reaches its most cinematic. Two million people. The Blue Angels. Lake Michigan as the backdrop. The show has run continuously for over 65 years because it produces a feeling of scale that very few free public events can match. Knowing this event exists — and knowing which weekend it falls on — marks you as someone who understands how to get the most out of an American summer.

FYF Presents: Something in the Water — Los Angeles 2026
Sep 12 – Sep 13, 2026 Los Angeles, CA

Something in the Water is Pharrell Williams' curated festival brand, known for programming that bridges mainstream cultural credibility with genuine underground roots — hip-hop, R&B, soul, Afrobeats, and indie music woven into a festival experience that reflects the artist's own range as a creator and collaborator. After establishing itself on the East Coast, the festival's Los Angeles edition brings that same curatorial sensibility to Southern California. Location for the LA edition is to be confirmed — Downtown LA, Exposition Park, and the LA State Historic Park have all hosted large-scale festivals in recent years and represent the most likely candidates. Festival footprint typically includes multiple stages, art activations, food programming from local and national vendors, and curated brand partnerships that reflect the festival's fashion and culture adjacency. Lineup announcements typically come in waves through the spring. Check somethinginthewaterfest.com for confirmed venue, lineup, and ticket information as the September event date approaches. This is a festival for people who want curation, not just volume.

So-Cal Cosplay Shoot — Waterfront
Sep 20, 2026 Free Embarcadero, San Diego, CA 92101

Embarcadero, San Diego. September 20th. Free. The So-Cal Cosplay Shoot at the Waterfront is the open-air version of the community photoshoot — San Diego Bay in the background, the Embarcadero giving every costume an urban backdrop with water and skyline in the same frame. The Embarcadero setting works because the visual vocabulary is different from Balboa Park. The industrial waterfront, the ferry docks, the harbor patrol boats, the downtown skyline at sunset — characters who photograph against Spanish Colonial Revival architecture at Balboa Park read completely differently at the waterfront. It's not better or worse; it's a different image. Free to come. September 20th. Follow @socosplayscene on Instagram for the exact gather point and start time. The waterfront light is best in the late afternoon — arrive early enough to get the golden hour before the event fills in. Any fandom, any build. Photographers with gear are welcome and encouraged. The shoot is organized but relaxed. Come in costume and find the right backdrop.

You found your people.

They didn't know each other before Falkor either.
