There's one Saturday every summer when Del Mar stops being a pleasant day at the races and becomes the day — when the grandstand is full to the rails, the infield is packed, and more money moves through the windows than any other afternoon of the meet. The Pacific Classic is Del Mar's version of the Derby — a mile and a quarter, the longest and richest race of the summer at a million dollars, drawing the best horses in training in North America.
