About

By Labor Day weekend, Del Mar is running toward its biggest crowds of the summer, and the two juvenile stakes on this card are where the fall championship story quietly begins - the races that crown the best two-year-old filly and colt on the West Coast before anyone is thinking about October. The Del Mar Debutante Stakes and Del Mar Futurity carry that forward-looking narrative: they have historically identified the championship-caliber two-year-olds, and every winner in recent years has gone on to compete at the highest levels through the winter. September at Del Mar carries the meet's approaching conclusion and its largest crowds, all of it in perfect early-fall weather at one of North America's most beautiful racetracks. For racing fans, this is the weekend to mark - the juvenile championships that connect the summer to the Breeders' Cup in October, run before the summer is entirely over. The Del Mar Debutante Stakes and Del Mar Futurity run the first weekend of September.

Del Mar Racing — Clement L. Hirsch Stakes Day (Grade I)
In 6 days · Aug 1 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, …

The Clement L. Hirsch Stakes has been run at Del Mar since 1950. A Grade I race with a $400,000 purse, reserved for older fillies and mares — the names on its past performance list carry. On August 1, 2026, Del Mar's Saturday card anchors on one of the most significant race days the Southern California season produces. The track where the surf meets the turf, the field where the best older mares in the country compete. Del Mar in summer is one of the most beautiful racing venues in the world — a track built into the Pacific coast, with the ocean a half-mile from the finish line. The Clement L. Hirsch brings the highest-caliber field the summer meet produces. Infield picnics, reserved seating at the rail, the Del Mar stretch run with the ocean behind it. General admission, reserved seating, and hospitality packages available. August 1. Del Mar, California.

Del Mar Racing — Saturday Card (August 15)
Aug 15, 2026 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, …

A mid-August Saturday at Del Mar is the summer meet in its most refined state — the meet three weeks old, the horses knowing the track, the crowd a more concentrated version of the racing public. August 15 at Del Mar sits between the Hirsch and the Pacific Classic, providing a weekend card where the feature races on the turf course are as competitive as any on the calendar. The Pacific Ocean is visible from the upper grandstand and the temperature on a mid-August afternoon at Del Mar rarely exceeds 75 degrees — the marine layer providing natural air conditioning that makes this the most comfortable racetrack in North America. Bring a racing form, find a seat in the lower grandstand, and let the afternoon move at the pace it sets for itself.

Del Mar Racing — Pacific Classic Day (Grade I)
Aug 22, 2026 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, …

There's one Saturday every summer when Del Mar stops being a pleasant day at the races and becomes the day — when the grandstand is full to the rails, the infield is packed, and more money moves through the windows than any other afternoon of the meet. The horses know it too; you can feel the difference in the paddock before the first race is even run. The Pacific Classic is Del Mar's version of the Derby — a mile and a quarter, the longest and richest race of the summer at a million dollars, drawing the best horses in training in North America. The names that have won it are the ones people still argue about: Zenyatta, Shared Belief, Accelerate. Standing at the rail when that field walks to the gate in the late-afternoon light, with the Grade I Torrey Pines already run earlier on the card, is the summer's whole meaning compressed into two minutes. Del Mar, August 22 — the Classic runs late afternoon. This is the one race day that sells completely differently from the rest of the meet, so get your spot early: the infield for the atmosphere, the turf club for the view.

Del Mar Racing — Pat O'Brien Stakes Day (Grade II)
Aug 29, 2026 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, …

Late August at Del Mar carries a specific ache: the summer meet entering its final chapter, the horses at their meet-best conditioning, the grandstand still warm with a season that is running hard but has started, quietly, to close. The Pat O'Brien Stakes lands right in that mood. It is the major sprint prep of the meet - a Grade II at seven furlongs, named for the actor who co-founded this track with Bing Crosby back in 1937 - and it regularly pulls the sprint champions who are pointing toward the Breeders' Cup Sprint in October. August 29 is the final Saturday of the regular summer meet before the Labor Day stretch, and the whole card reflects it: full fields, competitive racing across multiple distances, and a crowd that understands these last weekends have a finite quality you cannot get back. Come for the O'Brien. Stay for the feeling of a season you can see the end of.

They didn't know each other before Falkor either.
