The sound arrives in your chest before your brain identifies it, and by the time you understand that a P-51 is coming out of a dive, it has already gone past.

Camarillo keeps a concentration of vintage warbirds that most airshows can only park on the grass. Through the Commemorative Air Force and the Pacific Coast Air Museum, aircraft from the Second World War and the Cold War — B-17s, Mustangs, F4U Corsairs, T-6 Texans — are kept airworthy and actually flown, in combat demonstrations that make the size and speed of these machines suddenly, physically comprehensible. Local operators fly things that simply are not flyable anywhere else.

On the ground: a large static display, aviation vendors, food, and open viewing along the flight line. Dress for Ventura County sun and get there early for a good position.
