Somebody spreads a blanket on the grass behind the pavilion, somebody else opens a picnic, and for ninety minutes on a summer evening one of the most beautiful outdoor rooms in the city belongs to whoever showed up in comfortable shoes.

Three nights a week from mid-June into late August, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion fills with military bands, Dixieland, big band swing, and Latin salsa. The salsa nights bring dancers — actual dancers, who clear their own patch of concrete and do not care that you are watching. The military band nights bring community groups who have been coming for as long as anyone can remember.

There are no tickets. No reservation, no list, nothing to buy. You walk in off the promenade, find a spot, and stay as long as you want. The City puts it on and keeps it free, and the crowd is every demographic San Diego actually has.

Bring the person who keeps saying this city is expensive. Then say nothing and let the evening make the argument for you.
