The convention does not start when the doors open downtown. For the people who have been planning this since spring, it starts in a boba shop in Orange County, hours earlier, over a table of paper cupsleeves somebody designed for a lineup they love.
If you have never been to one: cupsleeve events are fan-made, fan-funded, and fan-run. Somebody commissions the art, somebody else covers the printing, and a room of strangers who until now only knew each other as usernames sits down together and hands it all out for free. The shop has hosted enough of these that the staff know to leave the tables alone. It is the pre-show that makes the show bigger, and it is why the arena later feels like a reunion instead of a crowd.
A free afternoon in Orange on North Tustin Street, before the first night begins. Bring the friend who has never met anyone else who listens to this.
