You notice it the moment the sun drops and the bay goes black behind the stage: the sound stops behaving like a concert and starts behaving like weather.
The acoustic design took years, and out here it finally makes sense — the music fills the shell, travels toward the water, and comes back to you slightly changed on the way. Very few performance spaces on earth make the setting as much of the experience as the piece being played.
The summer season runs from June into October, and the programming refuses to sit still: classical, jazz, film scores, pop orchestral, whatever keeps an audience from calcifying. Because it is outdoors, no two nights are the same — the breeze off the water and whoever showed up both change the room.
Most regulars do the lawn: a blanket, a bottle, and the bay handling the rest. Bring somebody you can sit next to without talking.
